Well, I've a couple weeks off and on the first day my lovely wife decides she’d like to visit the local malls to do some Macy’s and Lord and Taylor shopping. I hate malls – primarily because I can’t open carry but also because there are way too many people milling about. Even when I want to visit a store (LL Bean, GameStop, Starbucks, etc) I want to get from one to the next without having to spend the entire transit time dodging sheeple. Did I mention my wife still hates that I carry? I think the mall thing is her way of needling me. Anyhow, on to the story.

I holster up before we leave and head off to the Pentagon mall knowing full well I’m going to have to store the weapon before I go in because with +100 weather and no reasonable way to hide my Glock 38 there just isn’t any other choice.

We return from wandering around the mall (I did the wandering while my wife found her clothing prizes) and I promptly retrieve my weapon and return it to its proper place – my hip. Then we head off for Tyson’s Corner. I punch the destination into TomTom and leave the parking garage without a GPS fix. TomTom decides the quickest route (while we’re underway) is through DC. I didn’t realize that until it was too late, at which time I promptly change direction only to end up on GW Parkway in completely stopped traffic. Not sure if I was worse off now than I was before. I unholstered my weapon, unloaded it, handed it to my daughter who placed it in the trunk through a pass-through, put the mags in the glove box and locked it then stowed my holster under the passenger seat.

I finally plotted a new route on TomTom that avoids DC and gets me off the parkway.

The whole time all I could think about were all the stories I’ve read about people ending up “criminals” because they violated some nonsense law without intent but by accident/oversight. It’s so frustrating when there are so many unreasonable restrictions on our Constitutional right to KABA.

I don't go any farther north/east than Falls Church when carrying in my truck, just so that there is absolutely no chance of making a wrong turn and end up getting stuck going into DC.

Crazy place to live. Hopefully SCOTUS will amaze us later this month and come out with a pro individual rights plus strict scrutiny ruling on 2A eliminating this problem. Unlikely, but ya know, it could happen.

Wouldn't that be amazing! I read most of the briefs and I must say, Vice President Cheney, in his role as presiding officer of the Senate, submittedby far the most historically accurate and sensible brief. Of course if one subscribes to the perversion that we have a "living" Constitution they will strongly disagree with the VP's brief.

FWIW, I've OC'd in Pentagon City Mall with no issues.

Gotta love those GPS units that think "location in VA" to "nother location, further west, in VA" should go thru DC, eh?

I've been to the Pentagon mall several times and never seen anything to indicate guns are banned. Last time I was there I had to purchase a shirt. I was carrying casually concealed (just a naval aviator type leather jacket that doesn't quite cover the whole muzzle). I took my jacket off in Jos A Banks so the salesman could measure my shirt size. There is no way he missed the firearm, but never said a word.

I guess he could of assumed I was government rather than private.

Is the mall off limits to legal carry?

My wife thinks TomTom hates her, now she thinks it hates me too. I'm not going to give up on him - he just needs some training.

How does TomTom decide to go through DC to get to Tysons from Arlington? DC is generally a mess of traffic lights and one-way streets, only way I can see it making sense is if you are crossing the bridge to use the traffic circle on the DC side just to turn west.

Instead of Tom Tom I use Map Map. Sometimes, the old ways are best I guess.

I've never heard much good about tom toms. I have a friend who had one, now it just collects dust in his car. My Garmin is very reliable and generally takes very direct routes.

My parents don't have a GPS system but my dad has my mother who he says has graduated from a backseat driver's license to a MSL (multi-seat license) meaning she can tell him how to drive and where he should be going from any seat in the vehicle. He just doesn't see a need to have something else in the vehicle telling him what to do. I don't have a navigational system either, but I'm getting married in November so really see no need to purchase one just for the summer.

Yeah, but the difference is if I miss an exit, all the GPS does is "bing: recacluating". The multi seat drivers seem to always have the extended, editorialized version of the recalculating algorithm.

My SGRlikes to fall asleep on drives that take more then 40 minutes, so I rely on Map Map, plot the route prior or rely on dumb luck.

My BSD'ers would have me stopping every 5 minutes for potty breaks or to get those cheap toys at McDonald's.

(Map, Map stolen from Tomahawk)
SGR= Shotgun rider)

I keep a lockable case in the car for just such occasions when travel near DC.

Agent19,

That's a very interesting point. I've considered purchasing a GunVault and permanently afixing it inside the trunk of my car.

I had my daughter place the weapon in the trunk since it would be better there than in the glove box or console. I think aGunVault would make a nice automotive accessory.

How does that help? My understanding is that, at least until the whole Heller thing gets worked out, it would be illegal for you to bring a handgun into DC no matter how empty or locked-up it is.

Am I mistaken on that point?

Federal Law on the Transportation of Firearms. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 926A

I will be traveling to and from a place that allows my firearm.;)
MD, PA and DE are just a few more mintues up the rode, prove I'm not taking a day trip.

The above isn't a guarantee against arrest just provides a defense, as does my denying consent to search.

If I'm going to get caught I'd at least want a leg to stand on.:p

Just in case no one wants to look that up, it essentially states that even where it's illegal to own a firearm, you can have it locked up and unloaded in your vehicle if you're traveling from one state to another. For example, driving from Virginia to Vermont for a competition, you bring an AR-15 with a 30 round magazine. It'd be illegal to own that in New Jersey, but you can drive it through as long as it doesn't leave its locked box.

Same thing nearly happened to me last year. I was shopping for a new truck in Northern VA (open carrying) and driving down some road when my son got all excited pointing out a sign that stated D.C. was a couple miles down the road we were on. At that point, I found a place to make a quick U-turn. It pays to educate your children in the safe handling of firearms as well as gun laws!

I did end up buying a truck that day and I’ve always wondered if open carrying in the dealership got me any kind of discount :D

I have no faith that my unloaded, locked-up pistol won't still get me arrested and convicted in the District of Columbia, regardless of any stupid ol' federal law that won't "let us keep the people of Washington safe by disarming law-abiding citizens!!!"

Pentagon is definitely posted. It's on their Code of Conduct thing next to the entrance doors out of the way on the left. We go in through the top floor, so it's possible it isn't posted on every floor.

What do people think about me wearing my bullet proof vest openly where guns are prohibited?
