I was at the starbucks on Havana and Mississippi on sunday and there were quite a few more people in there than usual. There wasa black guy sitting by the door (yes, there is a good reason for mentioning that he was black) and i noticed that he was watching me while i stood in line and while i ordered. after i ordered i stepped aside to wait for my tasty yet overpriced beverage. Two women came in and one asked me if i was in line and i told her no. then i hear the guy by the door say, "you're scaring everyone in here". I smiled and told him there was nothing to be scared of. he smiled back and said that he was scared. i don't know how serious he was or not, because he seemed pretty good natured, but slightly nervous. He said, "so that is legal now?" and i said that its always been legal, its just been in the news lately. i told him that it depends on the state that you are in and the business always has the right to forbid it. i told him property rights were just as important as gun rights. he said yes, thats true. he had an afrikan accent, and i suspected he was ethiopian. I asked him where he was from and he told me that he was from ethiopia. i was there a couple of years ago so we chatted about hiscountry and my trip there. at the end of the discussion, we shook hands and traded names. it was a good experience and i think he will remember it likewise.

so that was the first time in 6 months i have actually had someone say something.

There is a difference between growing up seeing civilians with sidearms meaning exercising one's 2A rights for self-defense and it meaning presence of warlords and pirates.

My wife is from South Africa. We're celebrating her becoming a citizen this weekend after being here for 10 years. I had to chose my SHTF weapon carefully. When we in the USgrew up with duck and cover or fire drills, she grew up drilling with people advancing on her grade school with AK-47s. Excludes a whole class of weapons that she's comfortable around.

Wow, this sort of puts things into perspective, doesn't it? We have it fairly good compared to some regions of the world.

Sounded like a decent exchange.

My first was some douchebag at Subway telling the 'assembler' not to mess up my order or they'll get shot. Naturally, that brought the attention of everyone in the store. I gave him a "what, are you stupid?" look and everyone followed suit.

Filled up at the crowded Safeway in Falcon. SIG GSR in plain view. Not a word, not a second glance. This is El Paso County, after all.

Gunslinger,

I use that gas station regularly and, except for the sideways glances from some of the patrons, I've never even had them look twice at me. The Diamond Shamrock, or Corner Store or whatever they're called now, also has pleasant employees and I've only had one ask me about what kind of gun I was carrying.

Same, though have not yet been to Aurora. Just Pueblo and some towns in the backcountry.

I fill up at a local Shell station, and have gotten to know the guys quite well. Only once did either of the two night-shift guys ask me why I carried a gun, and my response was, "because the bad guys are carrying, too." That and friendly conversation seemed to suffice, and these days I always stay a few minutes and chit-chat. They seem to enjoy it, and one of them said, I'd much rather have you in here carrying than half of the folks come in here who I don't know if they're carrying or not."

Since9, exact same conversation with my nearest gas station night staff. When they I'm pulling up in a super beat up old Chevy 4x4 ... they know I'm not a cop. Then the pistol question and the answer..

1 "Is it really that bad out there?"

2 "Does it have to be?"

Glad it ended on a good note and you educated someone on our laws in a positive fashion.

Now that he's in America, hopefully he too will start exercising his right to OC.

i don't know how immigration laws apply to that. he may or may not be a citizen. but if he could, i'd hope that he would.

If he/she has a valid Green Card, he/she can buy firearms and in most shall issue states he can also be issued a CHL if he/she is able to meet all criteria.

But as far as OC goes, so long as they are here in the US legally (tourist visa, student visa or business visa) they can also OC so long as the state does not have any residency requirement to OC in that state.

(I used to work at an immigration law office) lol

Yeah, there's a space on the background check form for an A#.

I'm new here, but I have had experiences similiar to yours. (people being freaked out by the sight of a gun). I actually found this badge to be quite helpful with easing the minds of individuals. Click here to see the link: http://www.visualbadge.com/BuildBadge_ViewPic.aspx?badge=S532A&base=silver&textfont=block&textcolor=black&text1=OPEN+CARRY+FIREARM&text2=PERMITTED+BY+LAW&text3=&text4=%22SHALL+NOT+BE+INFRINGED%22&text5=C.R.S.+29-11.7-101&text6=&seal=COE&refresh=1&basePath=Flash/&aff=C501

I KNOW that some will say this is another wannabe LEO trying to seem important, but in my personal experience i have found that this is the best way to stop the questions while wearing a badge that looks NOTHING like any LEO in the state of Colorado wears.

Let me know what you think!

Firstly, welcome to the forum. glad to have you with us.

2nd, the badge you posted does look like the US Marshals badge:

There are US Marshals offices/agents all over Colorado.

not that i don't believe you, but maybe you could describe the reactions you got without the badge, and the reactions you get with the badge.

personally, if i wore a badge like that, people would be even more suspicious of me. i don't exactly look the part.

That and whether or not the charge would stick, I'm sure the hassle from a LEO for wearing a badge while OCing will be greater than just OCing and minding my own business.
