The government of Sri Lanka immediately shut down social media [don’t have the foggiest idea how this was done] after the eight terrorist attacks by suicide bombers yesterday in an effort to preclude further attacks.

Netblocks reps say doing such tactics exacerbates citizens tensions and anxiety due to a vacuum of information about events.

Could social media be shut down easily here in this country in a state of national emergency, not a natural phenomenon event like a massive earthquake.

Ramifications ~ thoughts?

Sadly, too many people rely upon social media...look where this has brought us. Social media goes away today and the world would be a better place...except youtube.

Could be any government action could be preceded by a shut down of the inter net and cell services.

Knowledge on what is going on or what could happen is huge for defensive forces.

Our defensive group have tactical communication but those functioning and calling the shots by social media as we have seen from the ‘spurious’ massive demonstrations after trump was elected was interesting display of ‘spontaneity’ of the women of this country.

But contemplating in my pea-pick’n brain, imagine it the 60’s turmoil had instant social to orchestrate the riots across the country simultaneously?

False. Social media has brought light to things routinely hidden by governments and mainstream media. Shutting down social media allows governments and mainstream media networks to brainwash and dictacte the narrative they choose. Social media allows each individual the opportunity to exercise their free speech. The government doesn't "own" your online profile. The government doesn't "own" the internet.

Social media is not bad - people are bad. Government is bad. Control is what those in power seek and putting tape over someone's mouth is another form of control.

Imagine all the violence happening today with the access social media provides and still, no organized attacks. Makes you wonder if that "freak out what-if" is actually a reality.

Social media brings to light that which social media deems worthy of bringing to light. Shadow banning is but one method of reshaping public opinion on any subject...and not for the benefit of all.

Social media is controlled by liberals.

Social media is, as my pastor once said" straight out of Satan's rectum".

The federal gov. doe not own the internet. Attempting to shut down any portion could and, more than likely, would effect other parts of the information highway. A lot of our infrastructure would shut down. And, it would be like playing wack-a-mole.

If by "shut down" you mean "turn it off" as in "de-energize" and bring it to an idle state, that would likely require the cooperation of the actual providers (e.g. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, etc.).

If you mean "shut down" as in "disrupt", then that's a different story, and might be doable, albeit clandestine.
