Hosting events - Not so hard!

Hey guys,

After hosting a few events, I have just got to say that it really isn't that difficult.

Everyone seems very unwilling to take on the responsibility, as if there's a lot of work involved. Really, there isn't a whole lot for you to do. There are three basic things you need to cover:

1. Venue. If it's a public park, you should look into the park rules for things you may care about (ie: are grills allowed? Do they have an unenforceable ordinance banning guns?). There's not much to do here if it's public. If it's a private restaurant, get in contact with them to see if they're ok with a large crowd. I sent an email to Theo & Stacy's in Kalamazoo for an event in January, and the next day, they said we were more than welcome to come! The worst they can say is "No," and if that happens, just move onto the next place.

2. Date and time. Pretty much self-explanatory. check the events thread above for a reasonably available date, then pick it. Give at least two weeks advance notice, so people can reserve time. I've found that we usually have about 5-10 more people come than reserve a spot, so plan for that.

3. Publicize. This is probably the "hardest" part about it. People are shy. I get that. But it's really not so difficult. Just stick to a few main talking points (We're non-confrontational, we're out to educate the public, We welcome all to come join us), and make a short but sweet press release to send via email to local media. They usually have contact info on their website (usually news@example.com but not always).

These three things can be accomplished in about an hour of your time. And once they're done, you don't really have much more to do except show up and enjoy yourself.

When it comes to manning tables, there's really not a whole lot of difficulty, either.

There are a few main talking points:

- OC is legal! There are people that do it every day.
- Visit the Opencarry.org website for more information.
- We are a non-confrontational group which exists solely to educate the public.

That's really all there is. If you get a detailed question, hand them a pamphlet, and tell them that all the information they need is either in the pamphlet or available on the website.

If you're comfortable with your knowledge, you can answer questions as they come. Personally, having read most all the information available that pertains to Open Carry, I feel like I can answer some of the more detailed questions that may arise. If you don't feel comfortable, just say, "You know, I don't want to give you incorrect information from memory, so I'll give you this pamphlet, which should answer your question."

From there, you just enjoy yourself. It's really not hard. I had a great time at the Jackson gun show with Kimberguy. Met some good people, and added to our ranks.

Thanks Zig I needed to see this as I am in the preliminary stages of an event to be held in Aug at my gun club when we have our gunshow!
I think you need to have someone from the Second Amendment March there as well. As the Michigan Coordinator for the March I can help make that happen.

Folks we need help with the March. Financially it will cost us $75,000 for an organizing company to set up all the things we need for a large event in DC. That's just one of the costs. If every Michigan CPL holder donated just $5 that would be over $900,000 just from Michigan. Donations are dwindling and we need to kick start it. If every poster or viewer on this forum gave $10 that's over $10,000 right there. Lets donate for freedom, liberty and the RKBA.

Time to put up or give up. Donate what you can here.

My .02 cents from working the Taylor Town gun and knife show. Ismoid brought His lap top with a PowerPoint presentation from Venator (I believe), ramblinfeaver brought a 22" monitor on Sat. that we hooked up toIsmoids laptop to displaythe power point presentation.Alsoramblinfeaver brought MSP report handouts as well. We had all the MOC banners see ,http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum30/25136.htmlfor a pic of our table, dougwg and Ismoid had lots of MOC pamphlets to hand out, as well as 2nd amendment march pamphlets. My 02. Cents the 22" monitor worked great for the power point presentation. My suggestion another power point presentation on OC events only, got a lot of people wanting to see that people actually OC. Bring a power Strip to hook extra monitors etc. A bag chair as the gun show card table chairs get uncomfortable and bring a 3lb bag of wintergreen lifesavers :)
