Senator Tom Harkin has announced he will not run for another term in the US Senate. His term will be up in 2015 and there is all kinds of speculation on who will run to fill the seat he's occupied for almost thirty years. He's got a "F" grade from the NRA so anyone else must be an improvement.

In the mean time he's still in a position where he can influence judicial appointments, vote on treaties, and so much more. What can we, as people active in defending our right of self defense, do to convince Senator Harkin to vote correctly in his remaining two years in office? We cannot threaten to not vote for him in the future since he's not running. What leverage do we have any more?

I think the best thing we can do now is find someone who will represent the people, not the .gov, and push to get that person in. And unfortunately, senators cannot be impeached. The only way to be removed is by a 2/3 vote from other legislative members.

Article I, Section 5, Clause 2

"Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member."

I don't want Senator Harkin kicked out. I don't agree with everything he's done but I also don't see him as doing anything rising to the level of having him removed from office.

I agree that we must find someone that will defend the Constitution of this federation. There are many that are willing to take his place in the Senate and we have a year before the primaries to make our choice. What do we do in the mean time? Would writing him letters be worth the effort? Can we have any sway on how he votes in the time before he leaves office? It appears to me that Harkin is not willing to stand up for our right of self defense and this is a critical time for our rights.

I have written him several, snail and email, without response. Mostly about firearms. I wouldnt go so far as to say its a waste of time, but he does like ignoring people.

Snail and Email blasts have worked in the past, but in this day and age who knows.
