Just wanted to give thanks to all the men and women that sacrificed so much for us. From our Founding fathers to present. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families. Remember this presisident has nothing more but contempt for this Republic (whats left of it) and our hero s .

here is to my hero

My dad, God rest his soul (I can still say that can't I?), was a vet from Korea. He taught me life skills including but not limited to rifle skills and marksmanship. He taught me respect for life and how to face the challenges that it threw at you. I miss not being able to talk to him.
To my oldest son and daughter-in-law, I thank you for your service. (both are Air Force vets)
To my middle son and youngest daughter, I hope that I have done half the job for you that my father did for me.
For my wife, I promise to love and protect you.

My thanks to all the vets.

OK, you asked for it. I know you meant well. You just used a bad combination of words, and for that you get to pay the price.

"Happy" Memorial Day?

Happy?

There is what has turned into an annual rant I go into when anybody wishes me a "Happy" Memorial Day. It involves a lot of questions about just what they intend for me to be happy about, as opposed to those things I am
eternally grateful for because of the supreme sacrifices made by those we are supposed to be honoring during the Memorial Day holiday.

I am not happy about the white sales, the car sales, the mattress sales, the home & garden sales, or any other commercialization of the day. I am not happy about all the new movies holding their openings over the weekend
set aside to remember those who gave their lives so we could go shopping and sit in air conditioned comfort being entertained by Hollywood sycophants who completely disagree with the values and morals of those in whose honor
we are supposed to be taking time off from our jobs and other activities.

"Happy" Memorial Day? No, not on my watch. On this one day I will accept the offering of someone wishing me a "Blessed" Memorial Day, for I know I am truly blessed by the sacrifices made on my behalf by those who I will
never know but who I hold in the highest honor.

Thank you for reading my rant. I hope you understand why I rant.

stay safe.

I wondered how you ran your post count up, know I know.

I've got a couple of things to say, but one at a time.

First you need to learn how to use the quote button to properly attribute posts/POV.

Second it is considered very bad form here to attack, flame or make snarky remarks to others - especially a well respected member from whom many seek council.

Third, perhaps most important, today is a day set aside to remember, memorialize, pay tribute to those that have given their full measure, their all, their very lives to protect and insure that we may live in freedom beyond that all too brief period that marked theirs. They left behind family, neighbors, classmates, friends and loved ones. Some wives and children. Some never lived long enough to have children of their own. All had mothers and fathers. A litany of lives were effected by their departure from this place. Many died violently, alone in far off lands w/o the opportunity to say goodbye.

So is this a "happy" day? I think not - it is a somber day, one of remembering, reflecting and a reminder to offer thanks to those that gave literally their last ounce of life's blood.

Then you take a cheap shot at the messenger (violation of rules) and accuse him of running up his post count by his speaking to a subject to which he has every right to feel passionate. Better that you should take a moment to absorb his council, understand it and appreciate it as it was intended.............and maybe shed a tear of thanks. You'd be the better person for it.

you got all that from a simple comment Skid....you are good.

quote "First you need to learn how to use the quote button to properly attribute posts/POV."

who are you to tell me what I need to learn?

quote "Second it is considered very bad form here to attack, flame or make snarky remarks to others - especially a well respected member from whom many seek council."

full of yourself?

that is what I was doing in my post as opposed to your "rant".

you better look in a mirror. while we both might learn something from each other, you sound very condensending. perhaps your not the best one to council others.

oh, and have a nice day.

--Moderator Response--

My first reply was "unofficial" in an attempt to deliver a message - guidance is preferred to using a hammer. You may take this an an official warning to curtail rule violations. Improperly quoting and personal attacks are specific rule violations. Perceived attitudes and unwillingness to speak and act like a gentleman (directing sarcasm at posters, rather than addressing the subject) are no less unwelcome. Recommend a different approach in the future.

He's not the only one who got that

Someone who, to judge from your post count, has spent a lot more time here than you have.

full of yourself?

No, trying to give you some very good advice.

Sure did not come across that way.

I think he did a fine job of counseling you. It is readily apparent you do not respond well to constructive criticism.

oh, and have a nice day.

You do the same, while I remember all those who went before me and all those I left behind.

Understand the mental lapse/slip of the tongue. I've had more than one myself.

We should remember everyday the sacrifices made in our behalf. Today is dedicated to that end.

What would be a good greeting for this day of Honor? It is important that we wish others well and recognize this day.

"I wish you an honorable Memorial Day!" is a bit much. Maybe a simple, "Thankful Memorial Day!"

I dunno. I understand the need to say something like, "Happy Memorial Day!" but it still rubs me the wrong way. Any other suggestions?

Veteran's Day also needs an appropriate greeting.

(Oh, and I "got all that from a simple comment" too. And was left a tad aghast. skid's post was quality. The reply was uncalled for. Props to Grape for trying the subtle, personal approach. It is unfortunate that the hammer had to be wielded.)

Thanks to all who sacrificed for our Liberty and our security. I wish everyone well this weekend and hope that they take a moment to remember why we take the day off.

Oh, and I ran into a former student of mine yesterday. When he graduated, he went into the Marines. While in Iraq, he was shot in the head. He looks better than the last time I saw him, but I can tell that everyday living is still a huge challenge. We commemorate (not celebrate) Memorial Day because of sacrifices like Sean made for us. God Bless him.

Well, my greeting was a flop (not intentional) just careless. Ive shed a many tear for our heros and do not take this day lightly. Thanks for understanding.

No, your greeting was not a flop at all. It was, as you mentioned, an unintentional misuse of what has become such a standard greeting as to be used without considering that on certain days it may not be appropriate. I had no intention of singling you, or anybody else, out individually. My rant was supposed to get folks to think beyond the sales and new movies. Some other folks go on similar rants about those who, without meaning to offend, include veterans and active-duty folks in their celebration of this holiday. As a friend of mine says, if you can hear (or read) this, it aint about you.

As I've suggested, one possible greeting is to wish each other a "Blessed Memorial Day." It does smack a bit of the same "Have a blessed day" sound as the (in my own biased opinion that is probably not shared by very many other folks) religious zealots (again, my term, nobody else's) throw about. (In case anybody is curious, I am not a religious person. I am, much like most of the Founders and folks into the mid/late-19th century, a spiritual person.) Or you could just say "Hello" like every other day. In, again my own, opinion, it is not necessary to refer to the day itself so much as it is right and proper to ponder on the reason and meaning for this one day out of the 365.25 days of the year we pause to specifically remember those who gave their lives in support and defense of this country.

Now an editoarial pause so I can address p85 directly: Thank you for noticing how I "ran up" my post count - by having something to contribute towards the discussion, and hopefully something that will give others pause to ponder what I have said. That "giving pause" part is where my handle comes from - causing folks to leave skidmarks in the halls and on the walkways of their life as they stop suddenly every once in a while to consider something that was just said and how it applies. Not everything I say/write is so profound or important that it will happen all the time. But once in a while I manage to connect as I must have done with you. I hope that you will "run up" your post count with the same thoughts in mind.

For my friends who have communicated with p85 on my behalf - thank you. I am humbled that anyone considers it worth their while to stand up and say nice things about me. I am even more humbled that at times you find yourself agreeing with and supporting what I've said/written.

stay safe.
