Had my first opportunity to OC this weekend

I live in the carry-confused state of MS, but I travel back to LA every weekend to attend a house church, and visit friends and family. Most times I can't really OC, since we drive straight to my in-laws' house without stopping, and there are so many little children around that the pistol on my hip would be a severe hindrance. (My XD40SC sits in a Blackhawk Serpa, so the kids couldn't pull it out, but they would probably try their darnedest and some of the parents may not be too comfortable with the idea.)

However, this weekend we went to my folks' house first, and ran a few errands on Saturday and Sunday, so I decided to finally exercise that wonderful right.

Saturday:
  • Berrytown Produce, Hammond, LA. Took my brother and wife along. Spent probably 10 minutes shopping around and waiting in the checkout line. My brother (who was CCing) said one cashier gave me a funny look, but nobody made a comment and no one seemed even mildly upset.
Sunday:
  • Main's Grocery, Folsom, LA. Only my wife was with me this time. Never heard any gasps or comments, didn't catch any frightened looks.
  • The Salvage Store, Folsom, LA. Same as Main's, nothing out of the ordinary.
All in all, it was an interesting experience. I was acutely aware of the unusual equipment riding on my hip, but I just acted polite and normal and everything was fine. When I expressed some surprise that I never heard a single comment about the gun on my hip, she said "you have an air of authority and confidence, they probably thought you were an undercover cop".

(And yes, I did add those businesses to the database on Friendorfoe.us with positive ratings. )

Tangipahoa parish seems very OC friendly or at least neutral. I've never had so much as a funny look there (so far :D). St Tammany is probably similar in attitude, at least in the rural parts.

Good place to put one's toe in the water and get comfortable with carrying openly.

Give a holler next time your coming out this way. There's a couple of us on the northshore that are willing to get together at the drop of a hat.

Thanks turbodog, I'll definitely do that when I have time. Right now I'm busy trying to buy a house, so I don't have much free time out of town on the weekends, but once things slow down a bit I'll try to get something together.

Oh, one thing that I've wondered about - are the Louisiana Welcome Centers off-limits for OCing? I haven't seen any statements either way.
