GRNC Update 7-3-12: Gun Owners Mark The Death Of HB111

The death of HB-111

NC General Assembly adjournment today makes it official: HB 111 is dead.

As Legislators from the NC General Assembly pack their bags and head home after a hard two months of work, the leadership in the Senate should go back to their districts and explain why they left gun owners out in the cold. It seems that the main resistance to this bill which would have allowed families to protect themselves while dining in public came from the Republican NC Senate Leadership.

Senate Pro Tem Phil Berger and Senate Rules Chair Tom Apodaca shuffled HB 111 off to various unrelated Committees until the clock ran out. Despite your calls and emails asking them to reconsider their actions, they thumbed their noses at the gun owners of North Carolina.

We Will Remember in November

Apparently once they took their seats of power, they no longer needed to listen to you. In November, we have a chance to send a message back to our leaders in the Senate. Our message is simple: We will Remember in November!

Support those candidates who have proven they will stand up and fight for your rights, and remember those that have shown they will duck and cover when the first sign of resistance appears. Remember to vote, and vote carefully.

The fight for passage of a bill that will allow families to protect themselves when they are in public will continue. New legislation will be introduced next year when the NC General Assembly comes back to work... and we will be there. We will not rest until North Carolina finally joins over 40 other states which already provide some sort of “Restaurant Carry” provisions . No more lies, no more dodging, it’s time to get this passed.

Immediate Action Required

CALL PRESIDENT PRO TEM PHIL BERGER (919.733.5708) & RULES CHAIR TOM APODACA (919.733.5745): Politely let them know of your displeasure due to their actions relating to HB 111

EMAIL PRESIDENT PRO TEM PHIL BERGER Phil.Berger@ncleg.net, &
RULES CHAIR TOM APODACA Tom.Apodaca@ncleg.net , and let them
know you are not giving up on Restaurant Carry.

Suggested Subject: I Am Not Giving Up On Restaurant Carry

Dear Senate Republican Leaders:

I am highly disappointed in your intentional killing of HB 111. Despite your promises, you let the clock run out on HB 111; burying it in unrelated committees instead of bringing it to the full Senate floor for a vote, a move that would surely have sent the bill to the Governor’s desk. Instead of passing HB 111, you simply let it die.

I will remember these actions as I cast my votes in November. I will vote for candidates that will pursue future Restaurant Carry legislation, as I helped put the current majority in office with this expectation.

Why did the main resistance to HB 111 come from the Republican Leadership of the NC Senate? I will be following the progress of Restaurant Carry in the next session through the alerts of Grass Roots North Carolina and will not be caught off guard again.

Sincerely,

A Concerned Voter

In this case it is not the restaurant owners fault, they try to cater to people who like a glass of wine or a beer with dinner. You have to remember it is also a violation of their rights telling who can and cannot sit down for dinner on their private property. It should be their decision, and the right should not be subject to a concealed carry permit. After all it is their property they should have the right to allow anyone to carry concealed or open without any permits. I can allow anyone to conceal carry on my property, all business owners should have the same right. I certainly hope that ALL gun owners and constitutionalists within the state of NC NOW push for a law that honors the constitution of this country as well as the constitution of the state. That means NO laws restricting the law abiding right to bear arms anywhere within the state. If a restaurant carry law is to be put up again it should be for All types of carry without the permit restrictions. If this had been done the right way in the first place it might have had much wider support.

you are correct but i was not done correctly. if an owner wishes to bar us from his establishment he can place a sticker on his/her door. as long as i am not drinking i can carry concealed/ or open if i so chose. i can also chose not to eat there as well. yes i do support the rights of the property owners but lets make them come down on the side they support. why give money to our enemys???

Well actually we already do, we cannot carry and eat in those restaurants by NC law, at least while exercising our rights. As it is now my wife and I rarely eat in any restaurant that serves alcohol because of the law. We search for restaurants that do not serve, one of those was in Pittsboro until the owner sold it and now it is reopened serving alcohol. So we no longer eat there. Now if the law is changed and the owners put up gunbuster signs then we will still not eat there. The choice should be up to the public, not some bureaucrats trying to play mommy and daddy.

I only open carry, but I know CCers who pay no mind to the restaurant ban. They take a chance they will for some reason get caught, but about the only way they can get caught is by something to happen in the restaurant. IMO a bill will get a lot more support if it follows the constitution, and those writing the bill don't make it exclusive. Maybe what we should really be pushing for is all of rights to be recognized and respected by government. We are getting trampled on daily by government buffoons and instead of fighting for rights we fight for privileges, it is not surprising that we have the mess that we do.

i agree with your point. i am coming from where OC is prohibited, i do so when i can, but those of us who carry need to stick together and we need to let the owners WHY we are not supporting their establishments. surely if we do not stand together we will surely hang together.

There has been no opposition from restaurant owners. Why do you want to attack them?

That was kinda my feeling when I read the thread.

To the OP, the restaurant owners have nothing to do with the current laws on carrying into establishments where alcohol is both sold and consumed, so while I admire your willingness to stand up for the rights, just make sure it's directed at the right people. Currently, those "right people" would be those in political positions.

a good list

it would be great if someone could compile a list of corporate hq at least for the chain resturaunts in n.c.
i would gladly write to them .
im sure they would be interesed in knowing that n.c. law keeps alot of good honest citizens with cash in their pockets from,
doing buisiness in their establishments.

The problem with that is most of the high quality good restaurants are not chain restaurants. The higher priced chain restaurants would be Chili's, Applebees, TGIF, Ruby Tuesday and so on. Most of the chain restaurants have web sites and contact information directly on the web site. I have an allergy to these type restaurants and prefer hole in the wall restaurants.

The restaurants have nothing to do with this. Most of the major restaurant associations in NC are for Restaurant Carry and spoke in favor of it. It is not the individual restaurants decision to allow weapons. For all the open carry only people here I do think that if this ever gets passed it will be by concealed carry only.

I agree that the restaurants have nothing to do with it. But there is nothing wrong with trying to solicit more support from them. It cannot hurt for OC advocates to reach out to chains and independent restaurants. And seeking a selfish paid privilege is NOT the second amendment, it is the very cow towing that got us with these oppressive laws in the first place. What part of "shall not be infringed" is not clear.
