I would recommend a Glock 30. I have one that has functioned flawlessly for me, very accurate, recoil not what I would expect of a compact .45 ACP. I carry it concealed with an IWB holster.

I've Been Eyeing The Glock 30

I agree that the Glock 30 is a great concealed carry gun. I am looking hard at a G30 but will wait a bit. I also am looking at the Kel-Tec PMR-30 in .22 WMR. Yes, I KNOW it is a .22 but heck, with 30 rounds of .22 WMR in one standard magazine....well, that is a LOT of firepower and cheaper to shoot and train with than the center fire guns most of us carry.

If I can get a good retention holster for the PMR-30 (when it is available....the gun that is) I will carry it instead of my G36 for open carry but still carry the G36 concealed (where legal). I love my Glock 36.

I would like to keep the price under at or under 500 bucks.

You should look into used pistols then. Glocks, XDs, and GI 1911s like Springfield and Auto Ordnance. With the recent release of the XDM .45 I would think that many people will be trading their XDs in for the newer model. Look into places like Gunbroker.com and Gunsamerica.com. Hope that helps!

Gunbroker and Guns America are good sources.Remember though, if you don't have a FFL you can't buy a handgun directly from an out of state seller if that seller has a FFL. The seller would have to send it to a Wisconsin FFL holder and then have the firearm transferred to you. That and postage could add $30 - $50 to the price. This info is just a caution. You don't have to pay sales tax on out of state internet purchases so that could be a trade off. You can run accross some good deals on either web site.

Try Gander, Monsoor's and Webke's in La Crosse.

Webke in La Crosse or Moe's Hardware Hank in Black River Falls. I think I've been to Monsoor's, but not looking for a handgun, so I can't comment on that. Gander is normally very high priced. A Ruger LCP was $350 at Gander, but $300 at Moe's. I bought my first guns from Webke's, but since I work in BRF now, Moe's is just easier for me, plus they have good prices and a great selection.

Taurus PT145 Millenium Pro

Chalk up another vote for the PT145 MP, I've had one for about 4 months now and have around 800rds through it and love it. I did experience some of the failure to feed problems when it was new, I made some small adjustments to the lips on the magazines and fixed the problem. It only happened with cheap ammo too, never had a problem with good stuff. It's very accurate for such a small gun as well, I consistently get 2.5 inch groups at 25yds from a rest. Definately worth a look anyways!

That rules out 1911s, although some speak highly of the RIA. I would look at the 24/7 OSS from Taurus. No other striker fired polymer pistol has 2nd strike capability, and it passed the DOD SOCOMM tests with flying colors. You can get one for less than 5 bills at Buds.

G36

I like the G36, accurate and easy to shoot. The slide is tougher to rack, as are most large cal. compacts. After toting the G36 around for a year I was in the Northwoods and switched back to the G21 for a awhile. Racking the G21 seems like operating a toy after the G36. I shoot the G21 better now since practicing with the G36.

As for price I paid $560

It was a new Glock for CC where required or a new multiband transceiver! Yaesu lost.

I just purchased a XD45 Compact for just over 600 at Fletcher Arms in Waukesha. It comes with a 10 and 13 round magazine.

Ammo for the 10mm is a bit hard to find, when you do find it be prepared to shell out some nickles.

It isn't hard to find at all, you just order it online...... Buy yourself a few boxes of proven defense ammo and your good, and honestly quality defensive rounds are the same price as for the 45 ACP. Also With the Glock 20 you can buy a drop in 40 S&W barrel for plinking and use the cannon 10mm for your defense, I may do it this way because then I just need one gun I can use for 2 leggers and bears while I'm remote camping and fishing!. Two calibers/ one gun for about 650$ versus two guns for about 1,000 to 1,2000$

Price

My advice is worth exactly what you paid for it - nothing! Having said that, there is a large distributor in Arizona that has made arrangements with gun dealers in all 50 States. Once you have decided on a handgun, long gun, or shot gun, go to www.galleryofguns.com and look up the weapon you want on the Gun Genie. Select the weapon and then get a "quote".

It is not legal to purchase a firearm on the internet, but it is legal to purchase a firearm on the internet provided a FFL licensed dealer is the one who actually handles the transaction and fills out each State's required Federal or State paperwork. The "quotes" come from local FFL dealers.

Gun dealers who have registered with the distributor I am writing about will offer a competitive bid. Since this distributor buys in such large quantities, their price to your Wisconsin FFL dealer may be lower than he normally pays. By way of example, I was quoted a price on this website for a bolt action rifle I want that was $100 lower than the lowest local price. In one case, my local gun shop wanted $479 for a .308 bolt action Savage rifle, but wanted $299 for the very same rifle if purchased through this distributor.

If your local FFL dealer is not a member of Gallery of Guns, you may want to ask him to "check it out" so that he gets your business. My local gun shop has told me that they make a substantially similar profit on guns sold through this distributor to what they make on their own. That is why they are part of the network.

I have a glock 36 it is okay, it is thin and small. It is kinda like a toyota corolla, it does the job but it isn't all that special. How about a kahr .45 ?
