FAIRFAX, Va. -- Students and staff from George Mason University took a field trip to Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly Monday in order to learn proper and safe gun handling. The students argue the campus would be safer if concealed firearms are permitted, so they went to a gun range to prove their point, News4's Darcy Spencer reported.About a dozen GMU students from the College Republicans participated. They were paired with NRA-certified firearms instructors and taught how to safely handle guns.Following the Virginia Tech massacre, some gun advocates argued that students should be allowed to arm themselves against would be attackers.GMU bans all guns on campus. University officials said they don't plan on lifting the campus gun ban.

Participants in Monday's field trip said they'll continue to fight to have the policy changed. Participants were given complimentary memberships in GMU's new shooting club, which is planning for a shooting range on campus. [align=right]Copyright 2008 by nbc4.com. All rights reserved.

Last Thursday I spoke with the reporter Darcy Spencer who you see in the video.

They sure did change Blue Ridge since the last time I was there...

I just wish I lived a little closer to Blue Ridge...but I'm happy with my membership I have a Gilberts in Lorton, since it's closer and I've gotten to know the people there over the past few years.

Any more info on the GMU shooting club? I'm very interested in that.

It amuses me when the school rep states that the GMU ban on guns comes from recommendations from the LEO's. Well, obviously the cops would say that. I view cops the same way I do pharmacuetical companies...they want you to get better...but not healed so you are forced to keep using their product. If every law abiding citizen was armed and crime plummeted, the LEO's would get less funding and would need less officers on the street.

If you think about it crime is good for LEO business because without crime you wouldnt need nearly as many cops. Eh, whats a few massacres so long as cops have job security.

Not that I'm anti cop...but to ask the LEO's what their stance is on it when so many barely know the law regarding firearms, let alone the stats in comparing gun freedom to gun control, is just silly.

The thought occurred to me that a FOIA of any LEO recommendations regarding student carry would be interesting. One simply to see if they exist, and if so what they actually say and the reasoning behind them.

I guess people just assume that LEO's are automatic experts on any issue regarding guns. Imagine if you were a chief of police and some college president called asking about the advisability of having a range on campus. You'd probably be inclined to say something like "What are you asking me for??? Call your attorney if you're concerned about advisability. I have no knowlege about that subject". Of course, if you are full of yourself and need to sound authoritative, you'd probably say "I don't think that's a very good idea. Guns and students don't mix, you know." Its always safer to say no if you are in any public position of authority, because if you say yes and something goes wrong, you'll be hung out to dry.

I don't want to sound cynical, but I suspect people call police chiefs with these kind of questions knowing they'll be told "no", then using the cover of the LEO's statement to avoid making any reasoned decision of their own.
