Gig Harbor Courthouse to ban firearms check in!!!!!!!!

Gig Harbor has announced that they are changing security procedures, they are now stationing a police officer at the court and putting in metal detectors (no problem yet) but then they announce

Backpacks are not allowed. Individuals with weapons or other prohibited items will be refused entry and directed to immediately leave the Court building.

I plan to call soon and explain how they are violating state preemption........

Gig Harbor is currently installing lockboxes for weapons check in, and Stacy said the news release was incorrectly worded.

Generally, courthouses are exempt from open meetings laws BUT they still do have a small number of administrative meetings...how would this fly in respect to you open meetings laws? In CT, they are going to install metal detectors this session...but our Act says nothing conditional to entry into a meeting...

in Washington courthouses and jails are the only government agencies restricting carry. if the city council or what have you meet in a separate building then the court they cannot ban lawful carry, if they meet in the same building as a court, and the local government certified that they have to make the whole building off limits to maintain security of the court then they can ban carry in public meetings, but the government is still required to provide lock boxes or an official.

Then, 7 minutes later you post that there is actually no problem whatsoever…………...

Could you, possibly, have made the phone call before the dramatic eight exclamation point headline, and realized that there was absolutely no need to start this thread? At all?

As for Mr. McBeth of CT, this is a WA forum and I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in how CT chooses to handle their courts or open meetings. If I want to know about their "ACTS", I can read up on them myself…... And, he is perfectly capable of reading the WA RCW's himself to find the answer his questions about our laws.

Thus, this thread has been a complete and total waste of time and bandwidth.

I had every reason from the deceptive nature of the press release to believe that the city meant what they chose to write.
