I posted this in the main forum but figured I would post here too. Hope no one minds.
This happened about six years ago.
My parents live a horse community in eastern rural Colorado. More and more people are moving out that to get away from the city and live "the country life". Some are transplanted kalifonians but most are Denverites. The thing most of them have in common is they don't have a clue. Anyway, my Mother, Girlfriend and Iwere outfor a ride on horseback. Even though it is a horse community and there are signs posted on the roads to watch for horses we try to stay on the bridle paths. These are areas that land owners have to leave unfenced on the backside of their property so that people can ride through. Some people choose to ignore this and fence off their property anyway. It was at one of these fenced off places that we were forced onto the road. As we were approaching a house I heard dogs barking. Nothing unusual about that but the horse I was on was a little green and he was getting a little jittery. Then oh happy day three rots' come running down the driveway. It was obvious that they were not wanting to make new friends. Two of the dogs went for my mothers horse and one came towards me. My horse had started rearing and rather than get thrown off I slid off. My horse took off and rather than the dog chasing the horse it came after me. I pulled my .45 from my shoulder holster and fired. I missed but it was enough to make him turn direction. The other two dogs were snapping and jumping at the other two horses. I couldn't fire at them without risking hitting my mama or girlfriend so I fired off three quick shots just past and to the right of them. Luckily they backed off. The three dogs regrouped and though they were not advancing they were not in full retreat either. I fired two shots into the dirt in front of them which sent them running back to the house. About this time a young girl of about 12 or 13 came running down the hill screaming and crying please don't shoot my dogs. I yelled that her dogs had just attacked us. She said "I'm sorry they normally don't act that way. They just don't like horses".
