Disability and getting permit question

I live in South Ms 91 miles south of Jackson near McComb. I have to go to Brookhaven to apply and as of the past 6 months have been on disability for depression and I don't see a psychiatrist but I have a mental health doctor I see every 3 months and he has me on antidepressants which I take only before bed to stop the depression. I am wondering if it would be hard for me to get my permit to carry my pistol. It's a Springfield XD .45 Service model. I read the law:
§ 45-9-101. License to carry stun gun, concealed pistol or revolver

(2) The Department of Public Safety shall issue a license if the applicant:

(i) Has not been voluntarily or involuntarily committed to a mental institution or mental health treatment facility unless he possesses a certificate from a psychiatrist licensed in this state that he has not suffered from disability for a period of five (5) years;

I have not been in a mental institution or go to a psychiatrist and only have been on disability for 6 months. I got on disability because the depression was making me not able to hold a job. I don't hear voices or anything like that. If there are anyone here that lives near McComb or Brookhaven and plan on meeting let me know I would love to be there. Thanks

I'm not a resident down there, but from what you've quoted of the law & explained of your situation it doesn't look like you're prohibited.

Also bear in mind that your private health records are just that - private. Without your permission, nobody including the gov't can get at them.

The reason they can learn of involuntary commitments, or being adjudicated mentally incompetent, is because those are court records & although usually not public they are available to the gov't.

It's sad that there's prejudice against brain disorders that doesn't exist w/r/t other diseases. It's worse when people consider 2A rights.
(But nobody suggests that someone with, say, schizophrenia should be prohibited from voting, or associating with friends, or worshipping, or having a lawyer present when being quesitoned.)
Too many people, some who should know better, think that any brain disease is a prohibiting factor, when really it's only the ones that are most serious.

If laws were practical, people with epilepsy or neuro / muscular* conditions wouldn't be allowed to carry. If they can't control their body, how can they safely control a gun? That's dangerous.

* that's 2 separate conditions, not the mis-writing of neuromuscular

Thanks for the info. I have another question about the background checks buying a pistol. I bought a Springfield XD .45 at a pawn shop and they ran a background check as they do when buying a firearm. So I walked out of there with my firearm that was checked. Do they use the same background check when applying for a permit? I am thinking if you can buy a firearm you should be able to get the permit to carry. Am I wrong?
Should I put this on my application or not. It states telling a lie will get you arrested or fined.

That would make too much sense. :D
Seriously, most states use the same info as the 4473, so you're probably good to go.
Some are more restrictive.
I usually start researching @ http://www.handgunlaw.us
Here's the PDF for MS: http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/mississippi.pdf
That should have links to various MS-published resources, all official-like.

And if there is a glitch, ask your doc to write a note something like, "as of this date, s/he is of sound mind and I judge her/him not to be a danger to self or others."

Or you could choose not to answer nosy questions from the gov't about your health.
As I said before, looking only at what you've posted, you are NOT a prohibited person.
