You can NOT carry into the DMV in Caldwell currently. I was going to, but when I got there, they have a sign that says
"Shirts and Shoes required"
--------------------------------
No Weapons
--------------------------------
No Food or Drink
--------------------------------
Please Turn Off All Cell Phones"

I didn't have time to find out, but I let John know about this and he made a phone call to the Sherrifs office to find out the story. They told him that the Canyon County DMV office is classified as a Court house and therefore cannot bring weapons in. I don't remember exactly, but it was annex building #2 or something like that. Maybe he will chime in here and post about it. I also took a picture of the sign on my way out and showed it to him. Nowhere on the sign does it cite a code or any other reason on why you can't carry. Just "No Weapons". The sign is about the size of a legal pad.

Ah, I go to the one for Ada County off of Emerald. Been in there 3-4 times as well as the Voter's Registration Office.

I suppose that since it used to be in the courthouse they think it still is courthouse. Personally I think it is just another county building. But, I'm not going to test until further investigation is done.

I'd like to hear some more input on this also. I live in Bannock County (Pocatello) and our drivers license and license plate offices are in the courthouse. You have to go through a security screen to get there. Signs are posted outside referencing a county code from back in the 90's for no weapons. If I understand our preemption section did not become law until 2008.

I understand the law to say no "Concealed Weapons" in a courthouse, but my understanding of the preemption clause is that they can't regulate open weapons. I haven't taken time to contact any county officials, but it I have been wanting to.

If anyone has more knowledge or experience in dealing with something like this your input would be greatly appreciated.
