S'ville police to cite man in accidental gunshot Friday, July 20, 2007 12:34 AM CDT

SCHERERVILLE | A Cook County correctional officer will be cited in connection with the accidental firing of his gun at a Schererville miniature golf center, and his gun and badge have been taken away, police said.

Jermaine E. Bell Sr., 36, of Lynwood, will be cited for discharging a firearm within town limits, a local ordinance violation, said Schererville Cmdr. Randy Reno.

Police were called to a report of shots fired at 10:11 p.m. Sunday at the Schererville Golf & Fun Center, 101 U.S. 41.

Bell, near the batting cages, identified himself as a Cook County correctional officer and told police he accidentally fired his gun into the ground when he went to put the safety on, Reno said.

No one was hurt.

Reno said Bell's story doesn't make sense because the gun didn't have a manual safety.

Bell was not charged criminally because it was an accident, Reno said.

Bell, who has been with the Cook County Sheriff's Department for at least two years, has been assigned to desk duty while an internal investigation is conducted, said Cook County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Penny Mateck.

Bell's gun and badge were taken away pending that review, she said.

Seems to me there is more to the story, considering there was not a safety on his firearm, sounds fishy.

Maybe that's why it went off. Barney Fife there didn't know how to secure his own weapon. I've heard that for some LEO's (and I'm not saying all, just some), the only time they even look at their gun is when they have to qualify with it. Seems to me, if it's a primary tool of your job, it oughta get some focus in your daily training regimen.

I've played a lot of miniature golf, can't recall where drawing and firing my handgun would have helped my score in any way. Shoot the blades off the windmill, ormake the hole in the clown's mouth a little bigger before putting maybe? :D

Nothing as far as the newspaper goes, although my friends sister works for the department that responded (schererville, IN) -- If she has anything to offer, I will post it.

Sounds fishy, as in "I'm the only one qualified...". My revolver has no safety, it only goes bang when it's supposed to.
