Hey all, I'm trying to find a good place to see all of the town/city firearm ordnances. More specifically for Cumberland. My buddy's father owns some land there and said he'd let us build a range of sorts as long as we're following all the rules. Which would be sweet! Anybody know them off the top of their head, or have a good place to find them? Thanks!

They are all pre-empted. They can regulate discharge of a firearm, but not anything else related to firearms. To see discharge ordinances you're gonna have to go to each town individually, there's no one stop shop for town ordinances.

So to see them, would I have to go to town hall, or just find one of the signs somewhere that has them posted? Thanks for the fast response, too.

If their website doesn't post them (and most do) a phone call with a request of a copy, or a visit to the town hall should suffice. Don't believe signs posted that quote statutes. In my experience many times the signs are often old and the statute no longer applies or the sign misquotes the statute. If they do happen to have a statute about the carrying or selling of firearms, just ignore it. Portland has two ordinances, one that prohibits carrying a firearm at night, and one that requires you to report private sales of handguns to the police department. Both ordinances violate the state pre-emption law and you don't need to follow them. They're invalidated.

And this one too:

Sec. 7-138. Firearms, fireworks, weapons, etc., prohibited.
The bringing of firearms into any cemetery, except by a military escort, is prohibited. The discharging of, or carrying, offensive weapons of any type, or the hurling of rocks or pellets, or the discharging of fireworks therein is strictly prohibited. This is not to be construed as prohibiting ceremonial volleys with blank charges by properly supervised honor guards as a tribute to a deceased person if such ceremonial undertaking has been previously scheduled with the superintendent of cemeteries.
(Code 1968, § 502.2(b)(16); Ord. No. 591-75, § 1, 11-3-75)

I would suggest just calling or visiting the PD which is on the bottom floor of town hall. My girlfriends mom works there and we are friends with the chief of police, Joe Charron. They are all nice people and im sure will be happy to let you know what the scoop is.

That sounds like a good idea; I think I'll do that on Tuesday. Thanks for the Chief's name!

Also- if you go on the cumberland website and go to contact it has a list of email and phone numbers for the various cumberland employees if you prefer the email route.

I am in the process of moving to the Brunswick area. Checked into places to shoot and shooting on public owned lands and private property.
I don't know the location of the property where you would like to setup your range. This is what I found out in my location.

In the city of Brunswick you can have a range on your property after obtaining a permit. To my knowledge, there are only two private ranges within city limits.
Brunswick range application:

I spoke with a Brunswick deputy to ask him the legalities and locations to target practice.
He stated that in the city limits you must get the permit. Out in the county, I was to find a place to shoot on public lands, (ie: power lines or public forest) and confirm location with local authorities (county deputies).

Staying with Brunswick, I found the city ordinance pertaining to weapons: (Chapter 17 WEAPONS)

However, I could not find any ordinances for Cumberland County. If you have any questions, contact the Sheriff's Office at the following link:

I hope some of this info is helpful to you.
Please keep us updated on what you find.
