A bill that would exempt guns and ammunition manufactured in the state of Oklahoma from federal regulations has cleared a House committee. The House States’ Rights Committee voted 8-3 on Tuesday for the “Oklahoma Firearms Sales and Manufacturing Initiative” by Arcadia Republican state Representative Lewis Moore.

The bill makes it illegal for any federal employee or agent to enforce any U.S. regulations on firearms, firearm accessories or ammunition that is manufactured in Oklahoma and remains within the state’s borders. The bill does not apply to firearms that take more than one person to operate or ammunition with exploding projectiles.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma House committee on Tuesday approved measures designed to expand gun rights, including legislation that would allow residents with concealed weapons permits to bring their firearms into the State Capitol.

The House Judiciary Committee voted 9-6 for the measure and sent it to the House floor for debate and a vote. But opponents questioned the wisdom of authorizing residents to bring weapons into a building that is frequently the site of impassioned debate over public policy issues. Firearms are currently banned from the Capitol except for those carried by law enforcement officers.

"Why are we doing this? Are you serious?" Rep. Richard Morrissette, D-Oklahoma City, asked as the measure was presented by its author, Rep. David Derby, R-Owasso.

Derby said the Capitol is a public building and Oklahomans who have completed the training required to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon should be allowed to exercise their Second Amendment rights in the building.

The state of Texas has allowed concealed carry holders to enter their capital building for years. They even have a special speedy lane just for holders. Just show your license and go on thru.
I have never understood why the state would not allow license holders to enter with their weapons. We go thru the required training, pay the state the required money, and go thru an extensive background check. What seems to be the matter? They can't trust us? :uhoh:

It seems that one (as-yet un-named) OK Senator is a little bit afraid of guns in the Capitol. http://www.ktul.com/story/24972637/sheriffs-asked-to-disarm-at-the-capitol

OK's top cops show up for their yeatly lobbying event. Some Senator gets all worried about there being "armed men" [who are not the OK State POlice assigned to guard the Capitol and passed the cops through whatever security checkpoint there might be] roaming around asking to talk with legislators.

It's a building of dignity and honor, but what happened at the state capitol recently has law enforcement crying shame.

"Everybody in that building knew who we were," said Wagoner county sheriff Bob Colbert, who, along with 40 other sheriffs from around the state, converged on the capitol as they do every year to meet and greet and lobby. Until...

"One of the senators, who they wouldn't tell us, complained because we were armed in the building," he said.

They were then given a choice, disarm or there's the door.

"So we all packed up and left," he said.
