After learning that they had changed their signs at the Lehi, Utah Cabela's, I contacted Cabela's Customer Relations to ask if there was a change of policy. The first reply I got tap danced around the question so I asked them to clarify. Here is the reply:

Thank you for contacting Cabela's Customer Relations Department Live Help.

I called the Lehi store and explained that the question was concerned with an open carry firearm, not one that you were bringing in for service or exchange. The response I received was that you would need to check the firearm upon entering the store and a safety lock would be placed on the gun while you were in the store.

This sounds like the individual you called simply gave you that store's opinion. I don't see why she needed to call the store at all in order to give you the corporate policy. I don't think this is in line with their corporate policy. The store and the individual you talked to seems to be in error. I have carried at Cabela's many, many times, as have many other members of the forum. My recommendation is to follow-up again with corporate and go as high as you need to to get the correct answer.

I emailed Cabela's corporate Customer Relations, they placed the phone call.

I got that part. :) Let me try to clarify what I meant. Why is corporate calling a store to verify policy? How does that make sense? I would call back and ask for a supervisor and work my way up from there if necessary. You can always ask for a copy of their corporate policy as well.

My bet is that this is not a change in policy but just a dumb answer to the original question.

Plus, why are you cross posting this?

Right from he horses mouth!

I just got off the phone with Kathy, one of the managers at the Lehi Cabela’s and their policy remains the same as it has always been. Regardless of how it is carried (OC/CC), the only firearm to be cleared and tagged are those that will be handled within the store (repair, fitting, etc). Anyone carrying OC/CC is welcome to due so. Nuff said!

Carry On!

Yep, this is what I was saying. Now the OP may want to follow-up and ask that those who gave the incorrect information get re-trained to avoid further issues.

If this is the case, why did they change the signs? The current signs exempt only concealed firearms from the check-in. Before I spend another cent with Cabela's they are going to have to make an official statement of policy and correct their signs to state that policy.

Umm, anyone can read and post in the Utah section. No need to start another thread.

Besides, what made you think the information you had constituted a company wide policy change?

In fact, the information provided in your first post makes it clear there was no policy change but you went ahead had started a new thread with erroneous information. Hmmmm.

Dont shop anywhere you don't want to but did you ever consider there may be a much more benign reason for the sign change? Is it not possible the previous sign was damaged or otherwise rendered unpresentable. The current sign you are so 'bothered' by seems to be the same wording they had when they opened their doors. Maybe that's all they had in the back?

Besides, since when do we worry so much about signs. To our knowledge, no one has been denied entry or asked to leave the Lehi cabalas.

Again, no problem to speak of.

Then your knowledge is very limited. I and several others I know have been told to check our firearms or leave. Before the change of the signs we had the remedy of taking the employee to the door and showing them the sign.

Because I started it here in the Utah forum and then from other reading it became apparent that it was not just a Utah issue.

And it only took you two weeks to say anything.

The entire opencarry.org is one forum with multiple topics and threads, and with this attitude that anything posted on opencarry.org is exclusive, it is no wonder that the traffic here is so sparse. I know it will bring an abrupt halt to my participation.

Isn't that a little like ATF saying a receiver is a firearm? Rather than a receiver? Lets just bend the definitions.

Spam is spam. Posting a non-spam thread to multiple forums is deliberate duplicate threading, not spam. Nevermind that it tarnishes valid threads with an undeserved connotation.

Maybe we can just make a Rule #21, or whatever number we're up to, about deliberately posting duplicate threads.

You really think anyone reads all postings? The time frame does not make the ruling any less valid.

Call them topics or sub-forums (generically forums) they are OCDO rules and terms if to be used correctly here are OCDO terms.

The ATF and OCDO are of different ownership and different rules. The rule already exists for OCDO as previously mentioned.

Could have moved the thread, but elected not to because the problem is not universal to Cabela in other states. Cabela has been regularly reported as following the direction/intent of state law in which each store is located.

What somebody doesn't seem to understand is...

Cabela's Corporate policy is set at Cabela's Corporate Headquarters, not at individual stores. If Corporate Policy says (whatever the Lehi store's signs used to say) then the store manager (who may be new there) is in violation of Corporate Policy. However... nobody at the Lehi store seems to know what it is, so, if you're really concerned about this, ask Corporate Headquarters at:
Cabela's Corporate Office & Headquarters

Cabela Dr

Phone: 800-243-6626

rpyne, as has been previously suggested, request a copy of their policy on OC firearms other than for repair. It sounds as if it used to be similar to the currently existing policy of Sportsman's Warehouse. If SLC wasn't such a drive I'd go to the Cabela's down there OC'ing, just to see what they had to say - or not say - about it. ;) Pax...

Especially for OC, a sign saying otherwise gives the appearance of us being the ones with disrespect and possible law-breaking.

If there is an improper sign, we should take the opportunity to see if we can fix it.

FWIW, I carried openly there on Wednesday afternoon, and stopped at the firearm check on my way in. There was a man and a woman working, and I asked them if the sign meant that they no longer approved of open carry. The told me that as long as I don't intend on removing my sidearm from the holster, that open carry is fine. The sign is still misleadinging, IMO.

I have it on my voice recorder if anybody cares.
