Shotgun robber no match for victim with handgun

Police say an armed robber got more than he bargained for Friday night when he targeted the wrong victim.

Just after 10 p.m. a 36-year-old man was confronted by a robber with a shotgun in the parking lot of the Walgreens located in the 3600 block of College. The man said the robber held the shotgun to his head and demanded money.

The man, a concealed handgun license holder, was able to get his handgun and fired one shot at the would-be robber. The robber dropped his shotgun and took off running fleeing south behind the store. The intended victim was not injured during this confrontation and he did not lose any property.

Patrol Officers set up a perimeter and with the assistance of our K-9 Unit began to search for the robber. An officer saw a man hiding behind a business near the area of Interstate 10 and Corley. The man matched the description of the robber. Police say the man also had a gunshot wound to his hip.

The original victim positively identified this man as the robber.

Beaumont EMS took the injured suspect to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth for treatment. Officers then took him to the county jail. He has been charged with aggravated robbery as well as two outstanding warrants for burglary of a habitation and a pending warrant for a previous unrelated aggravated robbery.

Officers also found a vehicle near the scene of the robbery that had been reported stolen.

Police say an investigation revealed that the man had used this stolen vehicle during the commission of Saturday night's robbery attempt.

This has to be a made-up story...
Everyone Knows [TM] that you can't shoot someone who's holding a gun on you - they'll shoot you first.
Similarly, if you pull a gun it'll just get taken away from you.
And remember that criminals are so used to guns that they won't be scared if you draw on them.

There are a number of very simple techniques that focus on the first person to move wins, especially at contact range.

In this case, there was little to lose and everything to gain with a shotgun to his head. Kudos, good on him.

Great points. Is there any place that addresses this issue more in-depth?

A man who has lost everything has nothing to lose.

simply awesome. I wonder how many more people he would have robbed if this person hadn't been armed?

I'm interested in how he was able to draw his gun and not get shot.

More details from the SKS forum:

It was a diesel truck, and he noticed the engine was running when he parked. Of course, many times people leave them running because they're diesels.

When he came out of the store he noticed it was still idling and took note.

But with one foot on the ground and one inside his Jeep Cherokee, the perp jumped from the passenger side door and threw down on him in a heartbeat.

Instinctively, he reached up and calmly kept pushing the barrel aside since it was right in his face.

He also said, "Man, don't do this. This is a bad decision your making here." Or something to that effect.

That's when he weighed the reality of the situation and asked himself, "Am I in a draw and shoot scene here? Should I really draw my gun and fire?"

He quickly decided it was because he saw it in the eyes of the perp. The guy meant business and began to look even harder and more intentional. And his voice became harder and more amped.

Pretending to reach for his wallet, he was thinking about the location of the external safety on his pistol which he carried IWB in a kidney position, right above his wallet.

He found it, took it off safety and, in one motion, swept across his lap and fired while keeping the shotgun barrel pushed away.

The perp fell/jumped/move backwards between the vehicles and rolled behind the tailgate.

By the time my friend exited the car and carefully moved behind the truck, ready to fire again if necessary, the perp had dropped the shotgun and was pulling up his pants to run into the darkness.

My friend was on with 911 and made sure they guy didn't reappear to attack again.

It was pretty dadgum textbook and his level head and training just flat worked.

He said he not only didn't use his sights, he doesn't remember any loud noise or recoil.

He swept the shotgun muzzle away with his left hand, drew and fired across his lap with his right.

The perp saw the gun as he drew and began to step backwards.

When he fired the perp was moving/falling towards the rear of the truck.

It don't work like in the movies, friends.

I think I have been over this a zillion times in my head.
