Hi, For kicks and giggles i have been contimplating putting together a old west carry rig. I was thinking of a strong side SAA(will be a transfer bar clone) with a small 1849 wells fargo conversion in somesort of weakside iwb/pocket.

While i know that there are better actions and guns out there for s/d. I am in love with the beuaty of the SAA and the power of the .45colt. Sure reloading will be a pain, but statisticly you wont need the full 6 rounds.

I know the pros and cons, i just need help picking the right gun.

right now im considering either a berrata stampeed or a tuarus guacho.
I know tuarus isnt a name associated with big quality, but, they claim to have kept the "4 click" sound and feeling action while also having a transfere bar safety making it safe to carry with 6 rounds.

So any advice on guns, and anyone else do it cowboy style. would love to see some picks and stories.

My mother-in-law bought me a western rig a little bit ago. I was looking to get something nice to put in it...looks like we are in the same boat. I dont know about you but I am completely clueless when it comes to old school typesix guns.

at one time i was obsessed ( lol ) with colt single action army revolvers. eventually, my wife and my wallet convinced me to move on to other things, but lately i've been eyeing those new vaquero's with the smaller saa type grip frame.....

On topic this time, I think a cowboy rig would be pretty kick ass. No doubt would get a few more looks. Also, you are not going with a "Hollywood" style, but a more authentic rig, right? (I hope)

Yup. I guess having grown up out on the West Texas/Mexican border back when Clint Eastwood westerns were all the rage there was no way to escape it.

I have a custom ordered USFA 7 1/2" barreled SAAand a Cimarron Arms Thunderer with the 4 7/8" barrel - both in 45 Colt. I also have a Ruger Blackhawk in 41 Mag - but I don't pack that so often.

When I am back in the US I am generally in Albuquerque where I have family. When I go on a road trip from there I usually have the USFA in a nice, tooled leather holster that I upgraded by lining it with brain-tanned buckskin. I still need to finish the cross draw rig I started making for the Thunderer a while back.

When I strap one of these on I am generally in clean jeans, polished boots, and a nice Stetson. I guess it would get some looks in a number of other places but out west it is kinda neutral.

If you guys and girls are looking for single actions, check out rugerforum.com a very nice bunch of guys. I carry a single six old model in rugers holster and belt. I am now working on a super blackhawk old model that will have a 5.5 inch barrel for easy carry. Dont forget we all dont live in the city, and .we have other things to shoot beside 2 legged varmints. I dont try to hide my gun and dont have to, why have a nice gun and holster and not show it off. On a side note i drive a cj7 topless so i cannot leave my gun in the truck.Be safe and not afraid Mtn Jack

YeahI tried "Cowboy Style" spurs and all..... My wife still looks at me funny.....

Oops I guess that is not what you are talking about. Guess I am not the only one here with mind in the gutter.

uhhhh. Actually I have had an itching to get one of those 44 top break clones that Uberti makes. Make that two of them . Crossed shoulder bandaleros full of bullets and double rig on my hips. I would love to OC that outfit.

i also love single action revolvers, but i also recommend going with a true copy, like cimarron or usfa saa's if you can't spring for a colt.i highly recommend mernicle custom holsters, they make VERY high quality concealment holsters ( or oc holsters ) for saa's.

Marine dad may i ask why you suggest a true copy? I read that the true copies from Cimarron or usfa, and even nib colts, are not safe to carry with them fully loaded. I dont believe that a six gun should be loaded with only 5 rounds, thats 20% less ammo goin down range at my offender. THo i do understand why the old west people put the hammer down on the empty chamber, due to Colts moronic lack of a real safety, and N/D's happend alot.

Im not bashing the people who do the load one skip one load four and lower the hammer on the empty, but, i just dont like the idea of not having all 6 loaded. Which is why i wanted to go with a gun with a transfere bar safety. I know Cimarrons guns are made from uberti, and they have a pin you can rotate in the hammer and make it unfireable, but that is kinda stupid for a gun you wanna carry around when the mood hits you.

I just hope my desire for a six gun thats actually a six gun not a 5 gun, is not considered foolish. I hope im making sense, i just find it hard to believe that the old west guys went around with only 5 rounds in there guns, seems like one hell of a handicap when the only person that had your back in those days was you, so you needed all the lead down range you could get.

I do Plan on getting a authentic rig for csa and halloween and any time i want to be a cowboy.

First of all, Ruger Vaquero's are awesome.

Second, the first OC experience I ever had was when my Father-in-law wore his Uberti .45Colt in a cowboy rig into the convienece store while I pumped the gas in my truck. I have been to that place many times before and also after and that was the most polite and orderly the patrons there have even been. That is when I started looking into OC for myself.

Lastly, Taurus started out as a company making cheap weapons. Yes, they were not great, some would say garbage. Then they bought the Beretta plant in Brazil lock, stock and barrel. By using the Beretta manufacturing plant and studying the way that a quality gun maker operates, Taurus learned how to make quality themself. While people have lots of opinions about a particular brand, Taurus is a quality maker now. The Stampede, while I do not own one, seems to be a fine pistol. And although I personally still recommend the Ruger SA wheelguns,

I know Taurus has quality practices because I do own their Automatics.

Well, im leaning back infavor of the cimmarron guns. I read there instruction manuals and other reviews and found out they have a integral hammer block safety thats actuated by putting the gun in the safety notch. Now thats the kind of thing i want. Keeps the four click and still is safe. Tho of course overall safety and handling responsibilty is still mine, but meh. Now i just need to save up the money to get one. I wounder tho, if they are strong enough for occasional fanning. I want to get into cas and i know that at some stages you have to or have the option of doin that. I know its hard on parts. Its not something i would do all the time. but only when i want to show off.

mordis,

i just like those old unsafe with six rounds originals, or a very close copy. if you want a truely tough single action that you can safely carry six in, i think you'd be much happier in the long run with a new vaquero. more aftermarket accessories, a very well built gun, and easier to find a custom gunsmith if you want it tweaked. plus, it'll last you a lifetime.

I agree. I have a Pietta/Remington 1858 New Army .44 and I've always wanted to carry it the way this guy did. It was an Italian-directed movie, an Italian-made pistol seems appropriate. I don't think I could ever look this badass, though!

Yep, Angel Eyes was pretty awesome. On a side note, you ever watch the un-dubbed version? Crazy.
