Any Churches in Nevada Where Folks Open Carry?

After being in Nevada at Front Sight for their 4 day handgun course I've been reading some posts on the forum here. I get the impression that folks in Nevada are a lot more comfortable around guns than those in Illinois, not a big surprise.

I was wondering if this comfort goes so far as open carry in churches?

Now in Illinois we've finally got into the 21st century and passed a concealed carry law. I've been conceal carrying in church for a while and a couple other guys transport handguns on their person. We have a "fireams friendly" pastor.

I think there are quite a few pastors in NV that are firearms friendly. A few of them post on here. I open carry to church here in Henderson. There are several others concealed including the Pastor and his wife.

There was a thread on this subject a year or so back. Some churches are ok with Ociing in NV. I conceal in my church. I know of an 85-year-old female who just received her CCW also concealing in our church. I believe others also carry. My pastor knows I am armed.

When I was in Nevada for the training at Front Sight I was with 5 other guys from our church. We worshiped at a church in Pahrump the sunday before the course started. Being from Illinois it might have been a little culture shock for us to see someone open carrying. I've got a Utah and Pennsylvania non-resident license to carry but since Nevada honors neither my only option would be to open carry. The guy from our church who invited us said their was no carry allowed in Vegas, which I found was not true. I did open carry in Pahrump when we went to supper at a hamburger joint one evening after training, one of the guys asked me if I knew I still had my gun on me. I said "If you can't open carry in Nevada where can you?" Nothing more was said after that. Maybe if we come again we'll visit your church Big Guy. If you ever come to Southern Illinois you have my permission to conceal carry in my church if you aren't just an open carry guy. Concealed carrying is allowed on private property with permission, as my church's elder I can give it. (BTW you won't we the only one with a gun, at least 3 others) I think open carry would be too much culture shock here, even though we're over 300 miles from Chicago. Illinois concealed carry licenses probably won't be issued til early spring and non-resident ones are a whopping $300. You out of staters can conceal carry in your vehicle if you can legally carry in your state. I assume that means Nevada folks eligible to open carry can conceal carry in their vehicles, without a LTC. Not sure if LEOs will look at it that way, though. You can transport an unloaded handgun in a case or vehicle console with a loaded magazine next to it. For the midwest we've got good transport laws. Also good self defense laws believe it or not.

I might add one of the reasons we finally got concealed carry legislation passed in Illinois this year is Mary Shephard a lady who was a secretary in a baptist church was almost beaten to death by fellow that broke into her church. A lawsuit was brought against the state of Illinois by her and another planetiff because Illinois law had no provisions for bearing arms outside the home. She had 2 non-resident LTCs. She won in the 5th circuit federal court here in Southern Illinois.

I am one of the OC Pastors that Big Guy is referring to.

I leave the decision to the individual, but would encourage concealed carry as a better option for the folks I pastor.

We do have folks I know conceal carry while at church - I encourage and appreciate it.

I'm a OC advocate most of the time - church is one of the few exceptions I find. One of the primary reasons being that we are trying to facilitate an environment where people are able to make themselves open and vulnerable to God in their prayer and worship. I personally feel that's more difficult when you are constantly aware of the exposed firearm on your hip.

So IMO its more an issue for the individual carrying than anyone else. I have no problem explaining things to someone who has a problem with firearms.

Djholmes, I do agree with you that I think that conceal carry is a better option in church. I can see in Nevada in a small church where everyone knows everyone it could be an option. I know that conceal carrying in church had me aware I was carrying a handgun on me, of course living in Illinois it probably comes with the territory. When concealed carry legislation was passed this year in Illinois there were those antis that wanted churches off limits to carry. There are quite a few off limits places but churches aren't one of them. If they choose to post of course that is a different matter.

Just playing Devils avocado... (no pun intended) the Open carry transition has been astounding in the last 5 years. As OC becomes more accepted, it will garner less attention and scrutiny, as this evolves, remember to "go with the flow" so to speak.

Hey TBG!

What is the name of the church that you attend? Does it have weekly bible studies and services? I would like to attend if that's okay.
