Another Reason to Avoid Guna Ranges

So today I was very excited to go to my local indoor gun range to test out a Glock and an Springfield XD so I could makemy long awaitedpurchase today.

I have been contemplating both these guns and also which caliber to buy, .40 or 9mm.

So I show up at my local range where I have been shooting since I was 10 years old. I have never really liked the range but its close to my house and basically the only option to shoot unless I want to drive 2 hours in LA traffic.

I brought my own paper targets and my own hearing and eye protection. I asked the range employee for a lane, a rental and a box of ammo. He asked me "do you have a gun with you ?" I said no. He asked if I was shooting alone. I said yes. He then told me they cant rent me a gun unless there were two people. I assumed it was because they wanted to charge me the extra $8 for another person.

I started to walk away and the range owner, who was standing there, looks at me and in a very accusetory and offensive manner says "suicide prevention". I looked back at him and smiled and just went "psshh, whatever". He then smacks his hands together like he is flipping me off and says "**** you".

Wow.What a way totreat customers.

How very nice to accuse someone of being about to committ suicide and then tell them "**** you" when they try to leave.

I noticed there were a few younger people there with some girls and it looked like it was maybe their first timeshooting or going to a range. Since we live in Los Angeles, we are indoctrined to be anti-gun and to believe gun people are wackos.

Is this type of behavior helpful to the image of gun owners ?

Are we to fear people renting guns because they might kill themselves ? Aregun range exployeessupposed to tellcustomers andlaw abiding gunowners to "**** off" ?

In addition, is the policy even effective at preventing suicides ? Makes me wonder about this video here where the mother shoots her son at the gun range. They had two people and two guns.

Well, I will never be going to my local gun range anymore.

I wonder if someone rented a gun at a range, he capped himself, his survivors sued, and they won. If I owned a range, not renting a gun to a solo shooter might be a way to prevent such lawsuits in the future.

First, people don't generally invite their buds to a suicide.

Second, if a guy pops himself with a rented gun, the presence of a friend who may have stopped him would be a possible defense. "Yeah, we know that people have offed themselves with rented guns. I had no idea he was thinking like that. Shouldn't his friend have had some inkling? Shouldn't his friend have stopped him?"

All that being said, the manager had no cause to talk to you the way he did. That range sounds awfully convenient, though. Maybe the guy had a bad day. Maybe you should talk it over with him and give him a chance to make it right. If not, he loses business, but you lose a lot of convenience.

Just a pair of pennies.

Don't take it personally. I don't think there is a range anywhere that will rent to a single person. Suicide by rental has happened two or three times around my area that I know of.

Yeah, I know if they really want to, people will off themselves no matter what. It's just the range owners don't need the B.S. or your blood and brainssplattered all over their range.

Nor do they want to have to settle the lawsuit.

Basically no ranges will rent guns to solo shooters who don't have their own.

However, that manager is an asshat. Maybe they'll avoid future suicides by going out of business. :celebrate

I have to admitt I had no idea that ranges had that policy. If I had known I would have taken one of my revolvers with me.

If the range employee would have simply said "due to insurance restrictions we cant rent to solo shooters" or at least made some effort to explain then I would have totally understood and gone home to get one of my revolvers.

Indeed. Hence the aforementioned asshattery. :)

They could also amend their policy for the benefit of shooters who would like to try other models. If you bring your own pistol, they should be happy to rent you any other model you wish to try. Who's going to bring their own gun to a range just so they can rent one to use in a suicide?

Well I just found a new range that is about 15 minutes farther away. The best part is they also will allow me to shoot my Mini 30 indoors and they have a larger rental selection so I can shoot more pistols to make my decision on which one to buy.

Really? Is that some sort of unwritten law in Kali? Because here in NV it is not a issue. Dont post things as facts when they are not.

It's not just California, I've seen that rule at ranges in Virginia as well.

Bully for you.
