Title says it all, Looking to spend a few days with my wife for our anniversary in North Lake Tahoe. I'd feel naked without a firearm, and wondering if it's possible to bring it along? I've read through Handgunlaw.us and it appears as if Open carry is allowed (also evidenced by the many posts on this site, thank you!) I did notice it says airport parking lot carry is ok, but no terminal. That's fine, as at the airport I won't be carrying it, just bringing it unloaded in a locked case to check in my luggage. Honestly I probably wouldn't even open carry, just more interested in having something in our hotel room, etc. I'll be flying into Reno from Salt Lake City. I've flown on a couple of occasions with a firearm, but never into your fine state, so just looking for any comments, advice, or warnings on doing such. I want to make absolute sure I'm not breaking any laws while enjoying my time there. Thanks for any response!

If in your suitcase while obviously traveling, you will have no problems. We have a very old law that technically makes this illegal without having a recognized CCW permit, but it is not enforced because everyone knows it was just a badly written law that didn't make exceptions for unloaded guns in a suitcase while travelling.

In your rental car or hotel room, you can have it fully loaded, anywhere, except concealed on your person (unless you have the permit.)

You can open carry it fully loaded as well, but resorts are among the more likely places to take an issue with it.

Keep in mind while traveling on or around Lake Tahoe, approximately two thirds of the lake is in the Republic of Comufornia. One can easily find themselves going from being an upstanding legal American to felonious commenting a crime that could put one in prison for years. Not by all of the sudden deciding to be a druggy, a theft, murderer, kidnaper, bank robber, nope, by just moving a few feet crossing the state line. How asinine is that? You may want to check what the CA laws are for in the vehicle. You can have it however needs to be in a lock box I am not sure of the details. You can have it legally locked in the vehicle however still in trouble if the mag holds over 10 rounds.

No more than 10 rounds, must be locked and unloaded in a case, must be transported in the trunk (exception is if you're in a single cab pickup - behind the seat is ok), and "out of normal reach of all occupants in the vehicle"

........this applies to transporting firearms in CA

For CA legal guns, CA law isn't quite so demonic, fortunately. There is no requirement for transport in the trunk or out of reach of occupants. It just has to be unloaded and in a locked case if it is a handgun and if it a rifle it just has to be unloaded and stay in the vehicle.

But no more than 10 round magazines are allowed. Some suggest that big magazines can be disassembled and converted into rebuild kits legally, but I'm not sure how well this theoretical approach works in practice (because I simply haven't looked into it much.) Under Title 18 USC 926, banned firearms could be protected if transported in accordance with its strict requirements, which include but are not limited to making no unnecessary stops and storing the firearm in a trunk, if you have one.

------

My non-lawyer opinion is that open carry is technically legal in all the non-secure parts of the airport, and that any time a firearm is carried in a case in the hands in a non-discernible fashion it is illegal under the law which makes no exceptions. However, in practice there is a good possibility of being harassed for open carry, especially past the 202.3673 signs which forbid concealed carry, and chances of prosecution for transport in a case, especially in an airport, may be low.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm aware that California would be a no no as far as any type of carry. I Probably will cross the state line a time or two, so would have to prepare accordingly, but I'm more interested in having it in my hotel room (in Nevada) while I'm sleeping. I'll be flying into and out of Reno, so as far as checking it, especially on the return flight, I should be good, right? no New York style surprise arrests and felony charges? that's what i'm most concerned with.

If flying commercially, there are specific things that one MUST do to be in legal compliance with federal laws. Firearm MUST be unloaded, declared at the baggage counter to the agent, and then checked and transported on the aircraft baggage hold while locked into a container that the TSA is unable to unlock. The form that the agent will provied you upon your declaration that you must complete and it must be IN THE CASE with the firearm
