VALPARAISO — A 13-year-old was being held at Porter County Juvenile Detention Center following a Siri interaction gone wrong.
The boy allegedly said to Siri, iPhone's voice assistant, “I am going to shoot up a school," according to a news release from the Valparaiso Police Department.

Siri then replied with a list of multiple Valparaiso schools near his location.
The boy, identified as a Chesterton Middle School student, posted a screenshot of the inquiry and response on social media, which was reported to Chesterton police by the boy's social media contacts. Chesterton police then contacted the Valparaiso Police Department, which launched an investigation into the possible threat.

Valparaiso officers determined the boy made no direct threat to a specific person, school or school system and that he had no access to weapons — ultimately stating the picture was posted on social media as a joke.

“The threat is not believed to be credible at this time; however, these types of communications are taken very seriously by the Valparaiso Police Department and our community,” police stated in a news release. “We continue to work with the Valparaiso Community Schools to ensure the safety of the students and staff.”

The boy is being detained at the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center and has been charged with intimidation, according to the news release. Valparaiso and Chesterton police said the incident remains under investigation, according to the news release.

So, lad posts an acknowledged joke [as determined by LE investigators] yet is still arrested and confined to Juvie?

Hummm...guess the nice LEs want to assure the lad gets the proper mental perspective and instruction for future activities through remaining adolescence...

Further, every future school this lad attends will be leary of anything he says or does!

Truly a shame

The timeline is not clear from the story. I read other stories and the timeline is clearer, but not explicitly reported.

If I understand the TL correctly:

  1. Interacts with Siri.
  2. Posts the interaction.
  3. Friends report him to police.
  4. Arrested and detained.
  5. Investigation.
  6. The threat is “not believed to be credible”.
  7. “Incident remains under investigation.”
  8. Detention continues.

If this is the correct TL, then I am OK with continued detention. The student spoke the precise words, “I am going to shoot up a school.” That threat must be taken seriously until the investigation concludes.

That is NOT a time line. Where are the times? Friends are now X-friends. And, if the so called friends reported it they must have believed he is unstable or they were trying to get back at him.

There is more to the story than being told.

Of course it is a timeline. Timelines only require an order of events, the order in which events occurred in time.

If the TL, the order of events, is as I have gleaned from several reports, then my conclusions have merit, some picking of time-stamp nits notwithstanding.

We live in a time of idiotic over reaction.

How many times have folks jokingly said I'm going to rob a bank?

And nobody lost their mind over what was a obvious joke

Eye95, I am sure you included the lad’s testosterone based conversations w/friends gathering and discussioning what ifs [?] prior to the lad asking Siri?

Did your meritable conclusions include nuances on how it was posted, e.g., dressed in Columbine garb, or with LGs, or tacticool clothing, etc?

I believe unequivocally your timeline considered the credibility of the shock & awe newspeek article(s)!

Let's finish, again my concern centering on key wording around the concept ‘investigated and determined to be not credible’ yet if investigation determined not credible, why is the lad being detained?

Imagine if JFK were alive today and somebody were to call out to him by his nickname. How many people would freak out upon hearing "Hi Jack !" :D

I hate stupidity. It's everywhere. But stupidity also includes self extinction. Good chances this kid doesn't belong a politically favored group, otherwise the social media remark would have been excused away (see other recent thread) and they'd be kissing his posterior. So you are supporting the double standards of your enemy - if their pets make 100% real death threats, it's excused, while if the rest of us make a joke as a teenager it's off to jail. Removing the non-favored one by one, and with the blessing of those who hope to appease the beast. Is your support of that attrition leading to more freedom, more respect for the Constitution, greater safety?

If I were LE I would look into it too, and I would take a good look, but if it turns out not a real threat then there's nothing further to be gained by virtue signaling and pretending that a joke or an imagined threat is exactly the same as a real one. That's nothing new; it's called zero tolerance, often about kids who draw pictures of guns or have a water pistol. If having a sense of humor is illegal, might as well lock everyone up and be done with it. Me and Siri are going to use alien technology to destroy the universe! 👽

Appeal to emotion noted. I look forward to more of your insights on various topics. Refer to eye95's #6.
