Hello all,

I am taking a trip out west this next summer to do the whole tourist thing. I have a permit from TN and my permit is honored everywhere we are going except Cali of course. I was wondering if I would have any problem if I just unload my firearm, put it in a carry case, and store my ammunition separate. I have a Springfield XD with the high capacity magazine. I noticed that it is NOT ILLEGAL to possess the magazine just to purchase or sell it in California. Any info you guys could give me would be great!!! Thanks in advance

Welcome to the big CA. If you have time I would look at the CAL DOJ website to answer gun related questions. There is Nothing that says you must keep ammo separate from your gun.

Traveling with Firearms in California

HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

Careful with the large cap mags. I'm looking for som info but to be safe buy some 10 rounders. Disassemble the high cap mags when in CA. Possession is a non issue IF you possessed the high caps in ca before the ban. IF you did not it could be considered importing. It's stupid and would almost be impossible to prove in court. BUT you want an easy time so play nice. Look here.

12020. (a) Any person in this state who does any of the following is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or in the state prison:(1) Manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, or possesses any cane gun or wallet gun, any undetectable firearm, any firearm which is not immediately recognizable as a firearm, any camouflaging firearm container, any ammunition which contains or consists of any flechette dart, any bullet containing or carrying an explosive agent, any ballistic knife, any multiburst trigger activator, any nunchaku, any short-barreled shotgun, any short-barreled rifle, any metal knuckles, any belt buckle knife, any leaded cane, any zip gun, any shuriken, any unconventional pistol, any lipstick case knife, any cane sword, any shobi-zue, any air gauge knife, any writing pen knife, any metal military practice handgrenade or metal replica handgrenade, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, billy, sandclub, sap, or sandbag.(2) Commencing January 1, 2000, manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, or lends, any large-capacity magazine.

You cant bring your standard capacity magazines into the state. Once you hit the CA border they turn into large capacity magazines (over 10 rounds) and are illegal.

good luck out here! your best form of self defense would be to have a cop and a lawyer with you at all times.

Now it says nothing about parts of a high cap mag. If the mags are disasembled before coming into the state you should be good. CA gun shows sell high cap "parts" kits to restore your high cap mags you possessed legally IN CA before the ban.

If you plan on Open carrying in CA I would recommend doing lots of research about CAs unique OC laws.

Let us know how you make out.
