The gun the 4yo used to shoot his mother was stored between a mattress and box spring.

However one chooses to store his or her firearms, he or she remains responsible for taking reasonable steps to ensure that bad things don’t happen as a result of unauthorized hands getting his or her firearm.

IMO, if one has a 4yo in the house, storing a firearm between a mattress and a box spring does not constitute such reasonable steps.

On edit: Here is the link I omitted, for which I was so thoroughly chastised:

Eye95, it was great to read your out of the blue post about this interesting subject w/o any kind of lead in or background?

...uh this is the one in indy reported nov 16, 3 years ago ?

Or perhaps the one reported in FL mar 16, 3 years ago?

[darn rough year fro caregivers and their shooting offspring]

See eye95, how confusing it gets ascertaing true nature of information without cites to separate B$ from reality?

I am sorry that I failed to provide the link to the story. An oversight on my part:

I will add the link to the original post.

To be sure, you could have simply posted, “Link?”, and I would have happily corrected my omission. Or, you could choose the tack that you did.

The video says the gun was under the bed, The story says between the mattress and box spring. I buy the finding the gun under the bed. I have a tough time buying a 4 year old finding a gun between the mattresses. I think the kid had to know the gun was between the mattresses if that was the case.

I don’t doubt that, if the firearm were between the mattress and the box spring, it is reasonable to assume that the only way the child retrieves the firearm from that location is because he knew it was there.

That being said, were I on a civil jury, I’d find negligence on the part of the boyfriend for putting the firearm there in a house with a 4yo.

Civil case, the girlfriend suing the boyfriend? She would be found equally culpable. Not as easy as you make it. Civil juries are advisory at best. If their decision is contrary to law and the equity or fairness is outside the norms the juries wishes will be ignored.

More facts would be necessary to determine if they were equally culpable. Was she even aware of the firearm’s presence or of its storage location?

My point was solely that the chosen method of storage was negligent. Standing to sue and shared liability are beyond the point I was making.

So eye95, reading your newspeek cite, the kiro newspeek HEADLINE unequivocally states 4 year olde, yet the newspeek text says 3 year olde? Such trustworthy reporting.

And the neighbour named ‘September’ is precious, as is the complete WA anti firearm rhetoric is absolutely fasinating!

The last status I had was her injuries were life-threatening,” yet “They say luckily, the mom is conscious and talking.
“She was shot but she's doing OK,” Wendy said.

Finally, critical thinking concepts apply: it happened at 1640L PST saturday afternoon yet the newspeek media have propogated the story nationwide within hours, in so short a time?

[to be sure!]

Eye95, the firearm didn’t belong to either the BF or mother but was ‘BORROWED’ from a friend!

WA being what it is with the passage of I 594 mandates did said transfer comply with the loan of said firearm?

If not, even more critical thinking about newspeek reporting since this aspect in their story[ies] circulating our nation and the world!
