Greetings,

I would like to get this "stickied" if possible. This will be an alert thread to identify the proposed legislation in WA (only) that we can have a material impact on if we lobby the legislators and show up at the public meetings....

So, it begins,

December 19, 2012

Dear Friends:

I join my constituents and our nation as we continue to grieve with the families of the 20 children and 6 adults killed last week in Sandy Hook Elementary School. President Obama said at the vigil last Sunday night in Newtown, “We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change.” The President is right – we are not doing enough, we can do better, we must change.

As a mother of three, I am deeply troubled that since the lapse of the assault weapons ban in 2004, no new legislation on gun safety regulations has been passed. Many of you have e-mailed me in the past few days urging me to support legislation regulating the sale and maintenance of weapons in our state. As your representative, I am fully aware of your constitutional freedom. However, as your representative, my primary concern is to provide for the safety and security of all citizens in all walks of life and in all environments.

I know that we must change. So, during our upcoming legislative session, I will support common sense measures to increase gun safety in our state, such as:

A ban on all assault weapons as signed by President Clinton but since elapsed.
A ban on high-capacity gun ammunition clips used in semi-automatic weapons.
Universal background checks to include closing the loophole related to gun-show sales.
Trigger locks and safe storage requirements.
A database in our state containing the markings imposed by every gun and a computerized system for tracing bullets and cartridge casings to the guns that fired them.
Thank you for contacting me on this important issue. Please continue to share your thoughts and ideas.

Best wishes to all,

Representative Cindy Ryu (D)

for the 32nd Legislative District

She needs to re think her duties as a "Representative".
As as a representative she is duty bound to represent the views of her constituents, not her personal thoughts that may, nd do, conflict with the views of those she "Represents"

Two democrats defected to give the republicans defacto say in how the committees are to be structured. I have not seen exactly what committees will be chaired by what senators, keep your eye on the makeup of key committees. Law & Justice appears to be given to the GOP...that might be a big deal to keep anti gun bills off the floor.

Maybe we should follow Alaska's proposed leade.

A Libertarian Speaks Out
This morning when I read the Anchorage daily News, I was enraged to find that more restrictive gun laws are being proposed as some type of remedy that will prevent school shootings. Common sense tells us that the horrific events that occurred at the Sandyhook Elementary School were a least made worse by the inability of the adults in charge to defend themselves or their students. Here in Anchorage our school district representatives have told us they are reviewing their "lock down" policy. That policy is basically to hide your head under the covers and pray. The policy of gun free schools is a Federal policy which has made schools a target rather than made them safer. It is time that Alaska repealed these policies and allows those school employees who feel their primary duty is to protect the students to have the means to do so.
What I chose to do this morning was to call both U.S. Senators and our Representative to let them know that I want to see these “Gun Free Zones” eliminated and allow for concealed carry in all schools in Alaska including the Universities. I also called my own State Representative and Senator as well as several other Representatives and Senators to express the opinion that they need not wait for the U.S. Congress to repeal these policies. It is in fact their duty to intercede on behalf of the people of this State when Federal policies are either unconstitutional or of harm to the people.

I would encourage everyone to call their Senators and Representatives, both Federal and State, and express your desire to give back to the people the right to defend themselves and our children in schools. Tell them their policies have endangered our children.

My question is, will the AWB exempt agencies of the state, and if yes, then could a hypothetical governor simply declare all the citizenry the "Washington State Militia Auxilliary" and then when you want an AR you provide money to WA, who then provides you an AR "for state business" and then delcare target shooting and three gun competitions to be "state endorsed militia training"

That would be interesting, maybe I need to run for Governor...

Assuming a federal ban of course.

Thanks for this. It gave me the opportunity to send cindy an email requesting she do a bit of research before making a bad law. Hope it works.

It's not just the governor who could do it, though it would take the governor to do it state-wide. In theory, any elected official of the executive or judicial branches could call up militia, though it would be limited to their area of authority. Some non-elected officials may be able to as well, for example a police officer requesting aid from a citizen (though more traditionally it's a sheriff that deputizes people in an emergency).

Yes, this means that an elected dog catcher could theoretically call up militia to help catch a particularly evasive loose animal.

For the duration of the militia activation, the designated citizens would have the same legal status as police or military when it comes to bearing arms (and what sort of arms they may bear).

Another forum I was on, was debating on ALL the members chipping in a grand or two, buying a small town that was already incorporated, then 'deputize' all the members, thereby giving them the legal authority to carry just about anywhere/everywhere in every state. They had it all figured out. The required yearly training is paid, making them ACTUAL 'paid' officers, and yearly 'union dues', due to the union, run by the city, were the same as their 'pay'. Hehe..

It's still possible :D

Apparently she isn't bright enough to read the short Article 1 Section 1 of our state constitution on what her job is.

Beaux Arts Village out by Bellevue WA is incorporated and only has 250 people, seems like an easy take over to me

Action Plan? A way to follow along with this and hopefully prevent them from proceeding?

I'll keep an eye on bills proposed and committee agendas when the legislature reconvenes

Washington has an open meetings law, any committee meet up will be open to the public so once we learn one is coming we must show. If committee meetings take public comment we must get up to speak. Choose one of us who is the most articulate to speak the pro gun side.

However I'm more concerned about an initiative or referendum. If an initiative comes forth and gets to the ballot, then we have a problem, becuase I think there are too many people in this state who believe media hype about combat assault guns in the media who will vote yes..
