BBC quote,
Limited law enforcement in Kenosha has led to individuals and groups taking the law into their own hands during the unrest, a spokesman for the Wisconsin Professional Police Association told the BBC.

Videos from Tuesday show armed civilians in military clothes congregating outside buildings in the city.
[the young civilian under discussion...]

Videos indicate he spent hours on Tuesday patrolling the streets before turning his weapon on demonstrators. He told journalists it was "his job" to guard buildings and even offer medical assistance to protesters.

...his social media profiles show a fascination with police dating back several years. A Facebook photo of him was framed with the "Blue Lives Matter" logo - a staunchly pro-police movement that often clashes with Black Lives Matter supporters. Several of his posts honoured police officers killed on duty, and he also posted pictures of himself wearing full police uniform. He is a former member of a local police cadet programme, Grayslake Police Department says.

Guns are another of his passions. Photos of the suspect show him posing with weapons, practicing target shooting and assembling an assault rifle.

In an interview on Tuesday night before the shootings, he echoes police language when telling a journalist why he is armed. "Part of my job also is to protect people. If someone is hurt, I'm running into harm's way," he says.

Later a video appears to show him shooting a man in the head. He then appears to be chased by a crowd before falling to the ground, and firing his gun at them.

He then approaches police vans with his arms in the air. A by-stander shouts "that dude just shot them", but the vehicles pass by to attend the injured protesters.

10 U.S. Code § 246:
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b)The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Apparently the young 17 year old boy is a member of the militia.

Pollak asked if Rittenhouse belonged to any militia.

Pierce responded, “I am not aware of any such facts. … This is something that a lot of people are not aware of, but this is actually the law under Title 10 Section 246 of the United States Code, actually, every able-bodied male in the United States between ages 17 and 45 is actually part of the United States militia, and that is provided for under the Constitution and Congress has enacted that statute.”

I know nothing, I see nothing, I say nothing.;)

In a message to Fox News, Pierce compared the teen to the unknown shooter who fired the "shot heard round the world" on April 19, 1775, in Lexington, Mass., as British and American forces squared off. The incident ignited the American Revolution.

Maybe he identifies with Prince Estabrook, the first African American killed at Lexington that day. I saw the charges from the DA, don’t seem to be effective against self defense with two dead felons with video of them both with hands on the rifle, and the perp shot in the arm with a pistol in his waistband.

The video I saw of the guy that got shot in the arm (and survived) showed him on one knee on the street with the semi-auto pistol still in his right hand.

oh, by the way, a phd history professor friend, when we were chatting about current events, chided & corrected me...the contentious location of the beginning of the American Revolution allegedly occurred in Concord MA which was immortalized by Emerson 60+ years later in his Concord Hymn!

now while not olde enough to have actually participated in that particular event, i therefore cannot confirm my friend’s correction per se.

I think back in those days "heroes" who had access to a printing press got to toot their own horns and exploit their heroism. By doing so skewing history.

Oh wait, they do that today. I looked it up on the internet that Al Gore invented.

Kenosha County Court Commissioner Loren Keating ruled that both charges would stand.

Rittenhouse’s arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 5.
A commissioner is not a judge. Her denial is not unusual. It is common practice. It has not been determined that a trial will even happen. They are only at the arraignment stage. In the big scheme of things, this is the first inning.

CoL - let's hope you're right. One of my concerns is that, with the presidential election turning out the way it did, the dems/libs will try and use this to push for restrictions. That could include attacks on SYG laws, SD/HD laws, etc.

It will lead to more that that

Welcome back.

The question is a jury trial or a bench trial. Which one do they have a better chance with?

I would think jury. The local populace has little use for those who burned the town to the ground or the police who let them do it for 2 prior nights without a cop to be found.

Its obvious that the local prosector and justice machine are trying to throw Rittenhouse under the bus to save their own skins. Id think taking the outcome out of their hands would be the way to go.
