HI:

I'm not a California resident.
I would like to hike from Mojave CA to Kennedy Meadows .
I would like to carry a gun.
Getting a clear answer is next to impossible.
Can anyone tell me if I can carry concealed or not concealed?
Can you also point to legislation allowing this?

In CA there are two items to concern yourself with whereas in most states, its a single item. Namely, 1) Concealment, 2) Loaded-ness of a firearm.

Carrying Concealed without an exemption is generally illegal. PC 25400)
Carrying openly on a belt is expressly 'not concealed' PC 25400(b)
Carrying Loaded in Public is generally illegal in an incorporated area (cities) or where discharge of a firearm is prohibited. PC 25850
Unloaded Open Carry is generally illegal in an incorporated area (cities) or where discharge of a firearm is prohibited. PC 26350 for handguns PC 26400, for non-handguns.

CA Penal Code usually describes what is prohibited and then provides possible exemptions. It is extremely rare that it talk about what is allowed. That which is not prohibited is allowed by default.

There are exemptions to both while within a temporary residence or campsite. PC 25606 / PC PC 26055
There is an exemption to concealment while unloaded and within a locked container (transporting on foot between two destination where one can have the firearm either lawfully unconcealed or concealed or loaded) PC 25505 to 25595

Ya, its sad that we have laws for making it illegal to have an unloaded gun...
I hate citing another forum, but there simply isn't a better place that exhaustively covers the topic - especially as it has evolved over the years.
