In a live conference, Police Chief Hank Stawinski told the press Sunday night that "officers did not shrink. They bravely advanced and engaged this individual who was threatening not just the police officers he was opening fire onto, but numerous members of the community in the area."

That's did not work out well ....

Why the guys shot at the cops is a mystery .. so I'll hold my judgment until then.

sorry extended to the officer's family for their loss...

kudos for the PGPD for having the fortitude to release the truth about the shooting of the officer.

hopefully, the PGPD can better train their officers on their reaction to these types of situations to preclude the loss of another officer.

shame, the officer who actually killed his fellow officer, now has to live with this misfortune for the remainder of his life...psychotherapy intervention will be quite an ordeal...

Anyone think that the "killer" should be fired? Maybe depending on circumstances ...

If there was no way to ID the officer who apparently was in an unmarked vehicle and civilian clothes, how would anyone know that he wasn't also part of the attack.

This is the same situation that an armed citizen could face should they choose to get involved with an active shooter and the police arrive.

When the feces hits the fan it's hard to tell the "good guys from the bad guys" other than uniforms.

Need more information.

1. Did the uniformed cops command him to drop his weapon/get down on ground?
2. Ya'd think that a cop, in civies, would know better than to get himself between uniformed cops and suspected bad guys who are engaged in a gun fight.

Well, if you shot a cop in civies who just yelled "I'm a cop!" would you be in jail right now?

Maybe by the fact that he wasn't part of the attack. It is the responsibility of every person armed to know who they are shooting at, and who is shooting at them. If it was a LAC that shot an officer just because he was black, and armed and a crime NOT INVOLVING him would be so deep up the scat creek.

IMO the shooter is incompetent, and should be fired. There is no room for incompetence in a job that holds lives in the balance.

“The shot that struck and killed Detective Colson was deliberately aimed at him by another police officer,” Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski

This was no accident.

You know he yelled or indicated "I'm a cop" to the other cops. Looks like they either:

a) did not believe him

or

b) shot him, just to be sure

or

c) did not like the guy

or

d) liked his wife

or

e) just like to shoot people regardless - as long as they can get away with it

Looks like (e) was relevant anyways -- they did get away with it.

Conjecture with an overly broad brush obfuscates any intended sarcasm.

Chief, during several appearances on talk shows and in TV interviews, has repeated the need to revise the policy on plainclothes cops responding to any event*. Stressed the need to revise policy is even stronger for cops working undercover - which was the case with this guy. No badge, no armor.

stay safe.

* - he did not say so in so many words but based on tone of voice and body language he might be looking at plain clothes/undercover cops not becoming involved even when the life of another cop or a hostage is at risk. If so, the
"instinct" of cops to race to the rescue is going to need to be beaten out of them.

I have tickets for those wanting to volunteer for that duty. Only ten cents per ticket, a whole buck will get you a dozen tickets. The line is over there --->.

stay safe.
