I'm looking to move to Arizona and build a house. I'm wondering who may be in the area where I'm looking to buy property. as I have mentioned before in another thread, I'm looking to build a gun range that will probably occupy about 1 acre of land for use as a rifle and handgun range. If folks are interested in assisting in the design and building of this gun range, I welcome all ideas. I also would make the range available for free as long as certain conditions are met. Such as used during reasonable times, scheduling use time and making sure that shooters clean up after themselves. I'm doing this for my own personal enjoyment but I figure that if I am going to go through the effort of building such a large gun range, I might as well share it with other like minded folks.

1 acre that's kind of small for a rifle range I have 700 yard range on a 80 and it isn't long enough some times.

Design depends a lot on the lay of the land and what lies behind your range

Do live in a city now a acre of land in a city might seem like a fair amount put out in the country it really isn't.

Well if you make the shooting lane 40 foot wide one could get around 300 yards and still only use a acre but that doesn't give you any buffer on each side.

And I guess what you mean by using an acre.

Or are you considering a berm 208 feet long.

I've got a half acre and my neighbors get all kind of excited when I shoot. Just kidding.

An acre in the middle of the desert is gonna look like a postage stamp. Even a 40 seems like you can hit all corners with a baseball, on an open piece of property.

If you narrow that 40 foot width down to 4 feet, then you could extend the 300 out to a 3000 foot range. Not sure where you could buy that, and not really realistic.

I've given some thought to burying a semi container in my back yard as kind of a combo shooting range/bunker. I suppose it could be done, but shooting inside a metal box sort of strikes me as a maybe too exciting adventure.......

You didn't drop a couple of zeros and mean 100 acres did you?

With the right property one and build a very useable range and have lots of fun on it.

I have ranges on all my properties 100, 12, 17 and 80 acre parcels but all of them have few neighbors.

First off, I'm looking to purchase 40+ acres of land. Below I have posted a couple of links to 40 and 80 acres plots of land.

My understanding of what and "acre" of land is is this. Take a regulation size football field. The field is 360 feet long and 160 feet wide. The end zones are 30 feet deep. 1 acre is everything but the end zones (so 300 feet by 160 feet or 48000 square feet). And I apologize, I ment 3 acres, not 1 acre (my brain had 300 stuck somewhere and I know I was thinking yards not feet) dedicated to making a gun range. This would make the range 300 yards long (900 feet) by 160 feet wide.

Those are a couple of examples of property I'm looking to purchase. Out in the middle of nowhere for all intents and purposes with neighbors being far enough away as to be near nonexistent.

That example is more then an acre, but only by about the size of an urban home lot. An acre is 43,560 sq ft. As a perfect square, 208.71 ft x 208.71 ft

On that type of property as long as you have decent back stops the whole thing can be a range on my hundred 100 parcel I have lots of hills and valleys I shoot when and where I want to.

I'm using a regulation size football field so that most of us can actually have a mental image of how big 1 acre of land is. I know that a football field (300' x 160') is a bit bigger than, but who here hasn't seen one at least once in their life?

So maybe say, 'about the size of 3 football fields placed end to end' :)
