Gun Violence: "Public & Mental Health Issues - What is our Future Hampton Roads?"

As some of you know, I'm a Block Coordinator for Neighborhood Watch. As such, I get emails from various folks announcing some event or other and asking me to forward the news to others who might be interested.

Well, I'm doing exactly that.

Please see http://www.eventbrite.com/e/gun-vio...future-hampton-roads-registration-11550163851

Fortunately, this event is on a Saturday (a week after the Hampton Gun Show, and at the same venue). The Hampton Convention Center is owned and operated by the City of Hampton; preemption applies.

I think a presence is in order.

Just registered.

I'm disappointed they did not ask for info on occupation - I would have entered "comunity activist".

Passing out GSL stickers to folks as they arrive might be more fun than actually going inside. You can ask president@vcdl.org to see if some Board members/EMs could coordinate that and make sure stickers are available. (Just sayin')

stay safe.

I too am registered, will be there, and have GSL stickers.

Only now realized that I could have reserved a block (multiple) tickets.

As to whether preemption applies just because it is being held in a municipal facility - it does not. The tenant/renter assumes a position of virtual ownership and can set their own rules. That being said, it appears the Newport News Police Department is the sponsor, which would be a game changer if it is so - right back to preemption?

NNPD isn't the sponsor. Monica White distributes all sorts of these fliers for a number of causes to her various mailing lists. All police departments have someone who does this. I get them because I'm her Neighborhood Watch list.

"No Firearms" Policy at the Hampton Roads Convention Center?

Well, I just got back from this "Forum".

It seems that the Hampton Convention Center has a "No Firearms" policy after all.

According to a Security Supervisor (the individual who informed me that firearms were not allowed), it is the policy of the company that manages the facility, SMG (www.smgworld.com). It told him that I didn't think that policy was legal due to state preemption, but he said he was only following the instructions given him. When I mentioned that the gun last week admitted many individuals with firearms, he said that SMG makes an exception for that event.

He gave me his card and I left the building.

The security supv. has no immunity likely .. ya gonna sue him?
