Try again, sugar. I haven't been libertarian in a long while.

Also, if you don't know of anyone wanting to go on swat raids for the hell of it, acquaint yourself with the officers in FL.

Thank god they arrested those folks cutting hair without a license, zomg! Chaos and anarchy abounds!!! If we didn't send in the SWAT teams, someone might have walked out with a mullet!

the running theme in all the horror stories in your article, all were in the deep south, not one was conducted by King County (Washington) Sheriff, and the officer this thread is about is not believed to be involved in any of it.

so going back to the start of this problem, disbanding king counties swat team would not have done anything about it.

But when you dislike/fear/hate something its easier to bring up other incidents that bolster your preconceived notion the it is to point at the actual individual or topic.

Isn't that how racism, bigotry, etc. All work? You compile incidents that involve X pet peeve and then lay them together to show why X pet peeve is evil, bad, corrupt, etc. The sadist part is when you use statistics/number to make your point then decry them when someone else uses numbers to destroy your preconceived notions/pet peeves.

It would help prevent future invasions of peoples homes by an unconstitutional militarized police force.

Oh did you miss the part where he is accused of selling contraband to his fellow officers?

Yet cops commit more crimes per capita than citizens, and you don't apply your logic to things you enforce do you?

Also quit equating government and its peons to society and free people.

LOL...his arguments consist almost wholly of fallacy including ad hominem, your libertarian (Rothbard not party) leanings for some reason to him don't need logical refutations because they come from a "libetarian" in his mind.

I was not referring to that officer, but rather your claim that you didn't know of any officer who went on swat raids like vikings, or some such hyperbole.

But nice strawman attempt.

that I want to see your sources on....

It's called research. I've posted it here several times over the years. Would it change your mind about anything? I doubt it you have such religious adherence to the state and its agents you will find any excuse to excuse it. Like you are doing here in this thread.

It is astounding that folks defend the existence of SWAT teams yet have no idea what the original intent of a SWAT team was.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams are equipped to handle hostage situations and armed criminals, but local police are increasingly using them to execute search warrants and drug searches — a trend that has led to devastating consequences, according to a new ACLU report. http://www.businessinsider.com/swat-teams-strayed-from-original-purpose-2014-6

A report issued by the Los Angeles Police Department, following a shootout with the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974, offers one of the few firsthand accounts by the department regarding SWAT history, operations, and organization.... The report states on page 109, "The purpose of SWAT is to provide protection, support, security, firepower, and rescue to police operations in high personal risk situations where specialized tactics are necessary to minimize casualties." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWAT

Disband SWAT teams.

With out the war on drugs some where around 90% of the reasons to have a SWAT team would be taken away. (No cit)

Just from observation.

When some one has the tools and toys one tends to find a reason to use them.

If the use was cut by 90% some one would say why do we need to pay for some thing used only 10 percent of the time.

Are there situations where highly trained officers would be very useful for the protection of themselves and the public yes. Very rare yes but they do happen.

Having confronted armed people who would or just don't care one way or another if they could kill you or not.

Having personally known officers who were killed by these types.

Over whelming fire power and good tactics are nice to have when confronting these types.

I don't think any one here would care to try and take some one into custody that has just killed one with a AR and is holed up in his residence.

Threating to kill others with just a pistol or shotgun and soft armor. Yes it happens been there.

Would any of you who demand that there be no highly trained officers availably please show up next time it happens and take care of the situation.

Yes there are abuses yes when they happen they should be handled , the officers and departments involved should be punished as necessary to help make sure it a very rare thing.

Safe guards procedures need to be in place and followed and if they are not and things go wrong those involved should be punished as necessary.

We do not live in a perfect world bad things happen no matter how safe one try's to be.

Is it an excuse no just a fact

How do we stop them being as diligent as possible, bring the mistakes out in the open and making sure when they do happen proper corrective action is taken.

Just some thoughts to think about.

How about 99.9% of the time they are not dealing with the scenario presented above.

How about not endangering everyone else in the house or in the neighborhood by militarized government peons escalating the situation?

Here is an idea, someone kills someone with an AR and then hides in his house. Send some plainclothes guys to watch the house and wait till he comes out. Or is that not better than sex?

I whole heartedly agree with this. LEOs across the country have actually done something very similar regarding high speed chases. When things get out of hand, they simply pull back and let the person go while still keeping tabs on the vehicle from the air or some such thing. That way, the driver will relax thinking that they have given up the chase and will stop somewhere. Then they move in.

Alot of these high tension situations are further escalated by the very presence of a heavily armed police force. All the police need to do in some of these situations is just hang back out of sight and they will eventually get the person without a struggle but instead, they go of Rambo style, break out the heavy weapons and swarm the place. I'm not saying that a SWAT team has no place, I'm only saying that in a vast majority of situations, there is no need for a full on SWAT team.

Walton County is a part of Florida that is so crime free you can leave your doors unlocked. When Hollywood location scouts were looking for a community so perfect that it appeared to be fake, they came to Walton County. The Truman Show, staring Jim Carey, was filmed on location in a small Walton County community...

It’s hard to imagine that community being policed by the 30,000lbs International MaxxPro MRAP. The weapon, just back from the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan, was recently acquired by the department. Now that it is painted black and labeled as a SWAT vehicle it is ready to be used not against Iraqi insurgents in Fallujah, but against Americans on Main Street.
