Hey guys, what gun ranges do you prefer to go to? Most importantly - why you prefer that particular range? Be it price, location, customer service, etc. I am interested to hear because I am seriously considering opening a range in las vegas that isn't geared towards tourists.

This is to be an indoor range, right?

Location, location, location. That said, if you cross the threshold of bad customer service, you'll never see me again.

Of course, the strippers hang out at the tourist range...

In addition to location, having something to offer like American Shooters doing their monthly evening matches for IDPA and USPSA. Even if you didn't offer a sanctioned sport, it brings people in. Heck, American Shooters should lose their sanctioning anyway. I quit shooting their matches because of the cheating and safety violations from their staff.

Offer a good deal on a membership. Someone using your range doesn't cost you much, relatively, so a membership is a win-win. They will tell their friends what range they are a member of. They will buy ammo from you. Some of them will leave their brass. They will always check your shop first for guns and supplies and transfers. So make the membership affordable. My $350 for an American Shooters membership was too much, even if I hadn't gotten ticked off at some issues and stopped going after only a few trips.

Oh yeah, and have a go-to instructor available... :D

Plan for growth. Once you commit to building the range, spend a little more and make sure you have enough lanes available, and make them wide. I would spend extra not to be cramped, even if the place wasn't always full.

For handgun shooting we use Guns And Ammo Garage. They allow you to pick up brass and even help you do it. 702The Range does not. We dont use them anymore. For indoor rifle we use Discounts range, as Guns and Ammo doesnt have the setup for rifle.

I've gone to guns and ammo garage which is nice because of knowoedgable RSO's. I have also been out to the Pahrump range and the new one in Green Vally.

From all the ranges i've been to I liked,

Range:
1. Lane dividers are see through
2. good brass cleaning equipment
3. don't make the distance dial too high tech.. but if possible have it display distance.
4. Mark the distance on floors & walls
5. Have decent lane "work" benches. Were you can place ammo, reload, place a camera for recording, etc.

Also:
have rentals!
Customer service is KEY
Have a discount type membership for people that shoot often.
And anything else you can think of that make people feel special, warm, fuzzy, and important.

I've shot indoors at The Range 702 and Guns and Ammo Garage. Between the two, I slightly prefer The Range 702 because they charged per lane and not per person. Guns and Ammo Garage cost my me and my wife about $15.00 more than The Range 702 for about the same amount of time shooting because they charged per person. The only thing I really didn't like about The Range 702 is that they did not let us pick up our brass.

I used to go to a range in Memphis that had a sweet deal. On Fri nights they had a "Date Night Special".

For $35:

2 Range Fees
2 Targets
1 Rental
1 Box of 50rnds
2 Dinners (they had their own deli, included Sub Sandwich, chips, Drink X2)

The wife And I loved it.

Picking up your brass is a big deal if you reload. So if you do reload then you didnt really save.

That is bad a$$! Wow... If only the cost of ammo alone wasn't $35 for 50 rounds that might be a good deal for ranges to offer these days.

I agree, and I actually picked up most of my brass when the RSO wasn't looking. I don't reload yet, but as soon as I can put together some funds and can find equipment and components, I plan to start.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that to me as a local, cost is my primary factor in determining which indoor range to use. I primarily shoot outdoors and generally can't justify spending anywhere from $20-$35 to shoot indoors on a regular basis. At that cost, it is something I might do once a month, whereas I'll shoot outdoors once per week or more.

MMM I wonder.... American shooters and guns and ammo have responded in the past to things other ranges have done. Next time I am in G and A I will ask about maybe doing the same thing for locals or forum members.

I understand your money issue but I just cant give money to someone who is stealing from me. And thats what 702 is doing. They bag that brass up and resell it. I know because the last time in when they sprung this on us I wanted my money back. The RO gave me two huge bags of brass for me to stay. He informed us of the bag and sell. When I mailed 702 about the issue they told me that it was because they dont want reloads on the range. Yet they do not know or check for that. After I responded that I knew they resold it, they responded with the matter is closed do not contact us again.

That was only 2 yrs ago. Something comparable nowadays though?

I read somewhere that the manufacturers have not raised their ammo prices (can't confirm the factualness of this). Just the retailers. So they could still keep it at the same price point for an event like this.

I was talking with my friend at Green Valley and he tells me they are having extreme trouble getting ammo at any price.

The brass I shoot is my property. And if they dont let me pick it, then I dont need to give them my money.

++++100
Which is a reason I stopped going to 702 (it's a nice range with a nice big store), also wasn't a fan of their hourly rate charge. Also stopped going to GVR due to not being allowed to pick up my brass; it's a new and nice place too and didn't mind the $20 whole day charge but my brass is my brass. Go to indoor places have been Discount and G & A garage but prefer the air ventilation feeling I sense at Discount F

Any informal outdoor ranges?

I used to go down to the one around Sloan, but it is now marked "no shooting", etc. with scary signs. Where else may one go? Thanks.
