Someone told me ME permits are paper. Are they all paper? Or does it depend on the issuing authority? Being from CT where our permits resemble driver licenses this was just weird to me. Anyone have a photo?

This is CT's

The Maine State Police issue a plastic ID that looks like the website listed above on the front and has your photo on the back. It's not laminated, it's plastic like a credit card.

Permits issued from municipalities vary greatly in size, content, and material. I've seen laminated photo, non photo, and non-laminated paper permits. I've seen as small as a credit card and as large as a quarter sheet of paper.

Wow. Way to go commonality lol. I turned my app in for my CCW so I don't have to unload getting in to vehicles. Just ordered a though rig for my serpa so I'll stool be OC in the winter regardless. Receptionist told me it was a paper permit, I was amazed.

Wallet sized paper documents get destroyed easily.

ETA: Anyone know if the SP will give you a plastic one like CT's if you bring the papery one to them? As you can see my CT one is very faded and its a printed plastic card. I live 2 blocks from the SP barracks in Orono.

The State Police will only issue permits to people who don't have a local issuing authority. Basically, any town with a PD will issue their own permits. You can't get your permit re-issued by the State Police. Complain to your issuing authority that their paper permits are too easily destroyed and ask them to switch to plastic like the state police or at least laminate. Also, it's not like this permit is gonna be taken out and handled often. Tuck it into a slot on your wallet and never touch it again. In the 5 years I've been open carrying, I've only shown my permit twice.

I use a money clip not a wallet. Since I use all my cards in it, sliding those in and out would damage the permit. I'll see if I can get them to change. I doubt it though as their budget probably wouldn't allow it(15 man force)

Anyone know of a law that would make the permit void if I laminated it myself? This might be considered defacing or alerting.

AFAIK there's nothing preventing you from laminating it. Make sure it's not on carbon or thermal paper. Thermal paper will get destroyed in a hot laminate machine

Thanks. And cold laminate 2 pieces together. Then cut to size.

Portland's permit is very nice! Similar to the drivers licenses. My buddy lives in Cumberland and got his, and it was just paper. Now I know why there is a backlog in permits for Portland... they need to make them look prettier! ;)

That and their computer/printer set up barely works! When I went in on Wednesday to have mine issued, the LT. who was helping me said he was having to hard reset the system after every permit he printed. Low and behold, after mine printed, the system froze up! That isn't helping the hold up!
