LEOs Approach With Adrenaline Pumping...

Had a couple of LEO encounters to report.

Last week I was working in the shop putting together a holster and heard a gunshot. This was 10:30 at night so I was fairly alarmed. I exited on high alert, heart pound, as you might expect, with my holstered 1911 at my side and met a neighbor coming up my drive. He had heard the shot as well. We moved toward the road and started to walk carefully towards where the shot had come from when two Sheriff's officers came running up behind us. They had been nearby on another call.

One of the Officers said, “Hi Dave. Did you hear the shot” I said;” yep, it came from over there.” Pointing towards an adjacent property, He said,”thanks and they carefully headed off in that direction” Neighbor looks at me with a look of "I can't believe they didn't mention your gun."

What was good about this encounter was that both LEOs had seen my gun, never made a comment about it, just continued past and on to the investigation. Turns out a neighbor had fired his shotgun at a possum. A little inconsiderate at 10:30pm. Much quieter since the LEOs chatted with him.

Then today, I was shopping at a Kwik Trip when a Sheriff's squad and the local police cruiser pulled in to the gas pumps side by side and blocking traffic. The counter person asked me if they were here for me. She was kidding... I think she was kidding, anyway. I said "could be, I'll ask." So I walked out and said hello to both officers by name. They replied with; “Hey Dave” and we chatted a bit, I said “adios” walked to my truck parked on the street, loaded up and drove off. I did put my seat belt on.

Not bad, not bad at all...

I suspect my circumstances are unusual and should not be used as a guide. I'm not sure if it is actually respect or just that they know me (small county and I am the only one I know of who carries) and have gotten used to seeing me. They all know me by name and my stainless 1911 on my hip is a dead giveaway. Most of all, they probably do not want to be embroiled in a costly lawsuit either.

I'll take what I can get. The bottom line here is that I think a young person can carry themselves with confidence, carry according to the law, don't be cocky and don't give them a reason to screw with you. know your rights and be able to recite them back to whoever might be screwing with you; in a calm and reasonable tone. Most of all, carry a recorder; either video or audio will do. Like they used to say back in the day, get tape.

There is a ton of info on our forum here. Bad info is usually rooted out. The best idea I can come up with is to search the forum and attend events. Never talk with cops unless you have to and then only with an attorney present. Cops can lie. They can use offhand remarks against you. They are not there to "Protect and Serve". The recent Madison 5 incident should be warning to us all. Some cops have a chip on their shoulders. Some cops are A-holes. Period. There are good guys out there trying to do their job but we are an unknown to them and they will be suspicious for the most part.

A lot of guys and gals here, will not give ID or consent to a conversation if approached. This is good. The cops have no right to stop you, ask for ID or engage you in conversation, unless they think a crime has been committed.
Reasonable articulable suspicion (RAS)

You have the right to say; If I am not under arrest, I will leave now. or ask them if you are under arrest and then if they say no, say I will be going on my way.

If I don't have everything exactly right, someone will be along to correct me shortly.

I think it is awesome that you are taking the Constitution and your own self defense seriously and have taken action to ensure you can defend yourself and your loved ones. Carry on!

Harballer must live in a utopian society. Seems like the Sheriff is more informed than the city cops. I envy his place of residence, and him.

Don't envy me to much. As I said before, it is probably less that they respect me and more that they know who I am and discount me as a threat because I have been carrying here for a couple of years. When you're the only guy carrying in the county, it is easy to keep an eye on you. Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer sorta thing. That's my take.

In the last six months, I have had two cops lie. One to a judge and one to their mayor and both of them falsified their reports. So I can tell you that it has not been a cherry six months for me. It had everything to do with my open carry. In open court the judge told me that my open carry was responsible for the violent threats and actions taken against me. I caused the problem because I carry. He also said, I shouldn't be allowed to carry a gun nor should anyone else and if he had the ability to do so he would take it from me.

Buffalo county is not a Utopian society by far MCX, wish it were so. The fishin's great though. I don't talk much about what goes on here because it's not my way. I'll take my shots and deal with them. Don't we all. Just don't be fooled by a kindly word from a cop. 'Cause both of the shots I took this year were from people (cops) I thought were friends. One I've known for 15 years. They have no good thing for you and can not be trusted.

Perhaps the judge should spend a bit more time applying the law rather than wishing that he could write it?

Understood Hardballer. It is unfortunate you endure the same lying police scum we have had the misfortune of dealing with. i guess there is no utopia, for any of us. a judge who utters such statements to you, as he did should be removed from the bench. he is obviously a leftist who has little respect for your rights.

These two cops should be fired and the Judge should be under investigation for openly admitting to not following the Constitution or deciding his cases in accordance there of.

+1000 couldn't have said it any better.

Just wanted to say, If my rant sounded harsh, it was not directed at anyone on this board for comments or questions asked. I'm pretty hot about what is going on and it is getting old. I have a full plate with my wife being ill. She doesn't need the stress these people caused nor do I. J.Gleason, McX and TyGuy, You are spot on. Thanks.
