First of all, why do they persist in calling it a "buy back" when they never sold them to start with? The news coverage of this admitted that some valuable weapons were turned in. Yet, their limit was, if I remember, $100 per weapon. So why aren't the ones sponsoring this hiding their faces in shame for bilking the owners of the valuable weapons?

Just wish I had been able to get down there and beat them to the valuable weapons. I won't even speculate on where those weapons will wind up, but I've got some pretty good guesses.

Some of our members have scored big time at these "buy backs."

The ones collected by the sponsors are generally cut up for scrap including rare and valuable ones.......or so they claim.

"At the second annual gun buy-back event, rifles, handguns, and shotguns were sold for $50 and assault-style weapons for $100. All other weapons, including air rifles and knives, were accepted but without compensation."

"All weapons will be safely destroyed so that they can't be used for illegal activity, Garrett said."

I guess I am a cynical old man, but I would be willing to bet money that some of those valuable pieces wound up in either the sponsors' or the police's private collections.

You've been there before haven't you? :p

I have. I went to a "buy back" in seattle. I stood on a corner, like a hooker, hawking CASH for guns, not "gift cards". Spent US$275 and went home with a half dozen assorted firearms. One of which was an excellent 1949 Winchester 30-30.

I saw a guy with an expended rocket launcher get turned down by the pee dee. Another guy bought it for a hundred bucks, the mayor got hissed, and they went over and confiscated it.

SVG and I did witness the pee dee "separating" the better" firearms from the refuse. We dragged a film crew over to see it, but it did not make the news
